Phil's whereabouts
It's about Phil's whereabouts. When we look back, we see Kit Snicket metioning that she met with captain Widdershins, Fiona and Fernald, which were back again. But in TGG, when the Baudelaires and Fiona are back from The Grim Grotto, the submarine is completly empty, no-one was there. Which leaves us to wonder what happened to Phil, who was in the submarine with captain Widdershins.
One might think that Kit just forgot to mention Phil, who, being the optimist that he is, would believe that the Great Unknown is a friend. But would Lemony\Kit really not mention that? Although Phil might've been right- if he actually was with the captain when they were "swallowed" by the Great Unknown-, that the Great Unknown is good, because in TGG it seems like captain Widdershins knew what it is and he would never let Fiona and Fernald go with someone\something that would kill them.
And that's actually a big contradiction in the series, since captain Widdershins also seems to be afraid of The Great Unknown in TGG.
But back to Phil. If he actually left the submarine with captain Widdershins, he might have died while swimming in the ocean, afterall, he was really happy when he was bitten by a shark and he might have thought it was a great opportunity to be eaten by a sea creature. And also, if you think again, he was bitten by a shark, so he would be in terrible conditions to swim at all. That could've also resulted in his death.
There's also the possibility that Phil didn't die, that he and Widdershins went separate ways. That Phil swam to the surface and started to live in some island or shore.
But would Phil's silly mind really doubt Widdershins' sense of direction and of what's the right thing to do? I highly doubt that. That's why I'll stick to the theory that he died.
