Can I give a submission ?
The theme is : "mass consumerism and disappointing snacks."
Too often a life led like those industrial apples - frozen for too long, in its own sarcophagus. Juice in the flesh, sweet in the mouth, pink in its cheeks, wetly fresh, firmly held, and deep inside, is where you taste the dead.

I can't see how anyone could object to you submitting a smashingly eloquent piece of poetry, thedoctororwell. I'm very glad you felt inclined to contribute. I guess that's also a reminder to anyone poetically-inclined that we're game for poetry as well as stories.

thedoctororwell: That was beautiful. I admire poetry and poets a lot. Tripping on your shoelaces, or simply tripping: Whilst walking in disguise amongst my enemies in a shadowy street, I was oblivious to the fact that the Universe was making plans for me. Felt it in my feet, losing balance. Pain in my whole body as it hit the ground.

That story only has forty-one words, F.D., but it looks as if the last sentence should have an extra word - that is, "Pain" before "in" - and that would fix it instantly.

How odd... when I was writing it, the wordcount on Word was 42. I fixed it though.

I love Sophie's Message, and Bsam's is fitting, also.

As a reminder, it'd be good if we could all settle on a secret message. The options are as follows:
"WE WISH YOU A VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY MR DANIEL HANDLER" (me) "HAPPY BIRTHDAY! MORE GIFTS NEXT YEAR! SO PLEASE LIVE!" (tk) "DON'T GET ANY OLDER, WE'RE WARNING YOU: IT GETS WORSE" (F.D.) "A HAPPY BIRTHDAY! LIFE GOES ON WITH MORE MISFORTUNE" (Brunch) "happy birthday, we hope you can manage a smile today." (BSam) "WE HOPE THAT YOUR BIRTHDAY CAKE DOES NOT CATCH FIRE" (Sophie Baudelaire)
I think we have enough ideas for these now that we should fix on one. My vote goes to mine, Brunch's, or BSam's, and I'd like people to settle up.
Equally, though, I'd like people to write some more submissions. I should emphasise at this point that they don't have to be stories per se; they can be poetry, like thedoctororwell's, or something more like an observation or comment. I've been busy lately, but I'll do some tomorrow, and here's one I've thought of today, on the subject of burglars in striped sweaters:
"There are those who say that people come in all stripes, meaning not the colour of a person's sweater but the colour of their heart, but a person who comes in a sweater of black and white stripes is probably a burglar."

I'm a big fan of mine, which I guess goes without saying. But FD's isn't too bad either.
I'll write at least one, perhaps more. depending on if we have enough. I'll work on my non-specific ennui one at some point soon.

I'm rather taken with BSam's suggestion as well; but on that note, how were you thinking we'd coordinate the stories, given that they'd be dependent on whatever secret message we decide?

I would like either BSam's or tk's.
I have been holding back from writing stories until the message is settled - we really don't want to end up with 42 stories all beginning with T. (Though of course that would be a misfortune, which might deserve a story of its own.)

My vote goes for either Sophie's or BSam's messages. I'm lacking inspirationg right now, but I have some ideas:
-Awkward silences
And for the more poetic minds:
-Regrets

I've been away for a few days, so I still need to go back and read everyone's stories before voting, which I always prefer to do privately. Still, I know they'll all be great. I intended to submit only the latter of these two, but came up with another idea, so I thought why not go with it? I realize these will undoubtedly require editing later on, which I'm totally fine with. I just figured I'd post them as is, for now. "The Importance of Being Color-Coordinated" Color coordination is a curious thing. And no one knew this better than the city’s sixth most important financial advisor’s husband. However, in admiring his rack of solid colored neckties, a sudden thought struck him. How does one go about arranging patterns? *** "The Consequences of Forgetfulness" Forgetfulness, as you know, is often an unwanted trait, and can sometimes strike us at the worst of times. It happened to me, when I opened my freezer and discovered my salmon burgers soaked in the frozen contents of my parsley soda.

BSam's and Sophie's are my favorites, and as it's been pointed out, I don't really want to write something until we decide which message to use. Once it's settled, I'll commit to writing two or three.

It looks to me like people are settling around BSam's secret message, and that's fine with me. Does anyone have any final points or objections before we fix on that? It's really key to get that settled, as then we can set out a big forty-two point scale and start pinning our microtexts to that, and see if any of the ones already written need editing.
