:Edit: Chapter Five is in the previous page.
The volunteers had reconvened in the bar at Dread Down. Most of them had openly resisted the idea of joining forces with one of the Unknown Agents’ very own scientists. ‘You expect me to join forces with her?’ Desmond Fulfillment asked them, when they brough Dr. Nebra in. ‘It’s that or stay imprisoned here for the rest of your life.’ Jill said. ‘I want out just as much as any of you. I want this madness to cease. For everyone’s sake. Not just mine.’ The volunteers were restless. Already had they talked and mingled with the Resistance, and they were forming a plan, a plan that would ultimately fail. ‘Soon Dominique and Vladimir intend to demonstrate to all of you the power of the Weapon. When you see what it can do, you will wish you hadn’t.’
‘My daughter. You said she is scheduled for reanimation tomorrow?’ Desmond asked Jill. ‘Yes. Dr. Lugae will foresee her reawakening. She will be kept up in the Bleak Bridge, no doubt, in my sister and Vladimir’s quarters.’
‘We must find a way to steal into the place and get Cindry out of it, then.’ Desmond said. Jill showed him a faint, sad smile. ‘Listen to yourself, Desmond. You’re talking about climbing all the way to the Bleak Bridge and steal into Dominique and Vladimir’s quarters, not taking into account the ammount of armed guards between here and there.’ Desmond sat on a chair, defeated. ‘What do you expect me to do here then? I want my daughter, Jill. I will not let her mother use her for this purposes.’
‘I’m afraid there’s nothing you can do about it.’ Jill said, seating beside him. ‘I need you down here, coordinating a diversion. When my sister and Vladimir turn their attentions fully to the placing of the Grimstone Gear on the Power Pedestal, then we’ll have our opportunity to strike back.’ Jill said. ‘Here.’ Jill removed a strange object from her inner pocket. ‘It’s the keycard to Unknown Agents’ armaments. Guns, bullets, bulletproof vests, gas bombs. All you need to cause the diversion. When time is right, we’ll escape The Great Unknown with the escape pods. For safety, everyone will be kept under stasis during the escape. Inside every escape pod are stasis machines, able to sustain life for long periods. We can disappear and stay under the radar as the Great Unknown and the Agents search the seven seas, pointlessly and aimlessly, while we are safe, and asleep. I have programmed the stasis machines all by myself. We’ll spend each two years asleep, scattered. They won’t find us, and not finding us, they won’t have the Grimstone Gear as well.’ Jill said.
‘That sounds like a plan.’ Audrey Addams said. ‘But…two years asleep? Is that even safe, medically speaking?’ Audrey was a doctor, even if she was a psychiatrist, but she had genuine concerns. ‘My nephew Nemo here has spent six years in stasis, with little to no consequence to him.’
Jill had revealed about the truth behind Cindry and Nemo, and the other volunteers looked at him uneasilly. ‘It’s not his fault. He didn’t ask to be infused with Grimstone. As neither did Cindry, so if any of you look at him like that again, you can forget about me helping you!’ Jill had said upon seeing the volunteers’ reactions. Nemo had quietly walked outside at that point, and Isadora followed him. ‘Why do you do all of this?’ Victoria Fulfillment asked Jil. ‘Why, after all this time?’
‘A woman grows tired of living as a pawn, doesn’t she?’ Jill smiled and produced a piece of paper from her inner pocket. ‘This is a map to the Weaponry of the Great Unknown. Use the keycard I gave you to open it. This map will lead you there through a secret entrance from below. You can use it to steal away the weapons and gear you might need. Also, I need to speak to Violet Baudelaire privately.’ Violet was a bit startled, after watching the elder volunteers converse for so long. She accompanied Jill Nebra outside the Dread Down bar. ‘Gee, I’d forgotten how cold it gets down here.’ Jill said, rubbing her hands. She had to be cold, wearing that teal dress under her thin white doctor’s coat. ‘You wanted to talk to me?’ Violet asked.
‘Yes. Tomorrow Cindry is being reawakened from stasis. I want you to be there. I want you to work for me up in the laboratory. As an excuse for you to be there. But there are other people who I want you to be wary of. I can’t have your brother up with me, or your sisters. Bringing the four of you might seem suspicious.’ Jill said. ‘But, since Isadora Quagmire is my sister’s handmaid, it’s not out of place as if I take you as mine.’
Violet looked at Isadora and Nemo, down a few steps, sitting together on the stairs. Nemo’s head rested on Isadora’s shoulder, and she carressed Nemo’s hair with her hand. How fitting that those two should be together. Violet was herself now with Quigley. She wished for Klaus to be with Cindry. It seemed almost ironic that Klaus and Cindry had had so much time together despite the villains’ efforts and that now Violet and Quigley had been reunited, and Klaus could very well lose Cindry forever. I am fairly certain it was for this reason that Violet Baudelaire agreed to serve Jill Nebra then.
‘I will help you.’ Violet said, and Jill smiled. ‘I’m sure you will. I have to go now or Dr. Lugae might notice my absence. Isadora will come to pick you up on her way up tomorrow. Try to get a good night sleep, Violet. And tell the others to do the same. We’ll be needing all volunteers to be at their full strength soon.’ Jill Nebra descended the stairs, and Nemo followed her, saying goodbye to Isadora. The two disappeared in the darkness of Dread Down, while Isadora climber her way back up to the walkway where Violet Baudelaire was now.
‘So, you’re with Nemo, eh?’ Violet asked Isadora, who blushed. ‘Well. Yes. I first met him when Dominique learned who I and my brothers were. She commanded for us to be brought up to Dread Down, and suddenly I was her handmaid. She treats me horribly, but Nemo makes it all worthwhile.’ Isadora sad with a faint smile on her face. ‘He has been so lonely, all his life. The things he’s had to endure… I felt sorry for him, and we became friends and later, something else. Quigley and Duncan didn’t approve. They thought Nemo was a freak, but they got to know him. And then one day Nemo, through Jill, thought to build a Resistance, to fight against the Unknown Agents, his parents and to break free from the horror of his life and to free everyone else who is also imprisoned down here.’
‘Well, Isadora. We’ll be all out of here soon. I promise you that.’ Violet told Isadora. The Baudelaires had failed the Quagmires before. Violet Baudelaire would see that they never failed heir friends again.
