I don't think Carmelita would be as popular at her school, if she was twelve but acted younger. After all, the "cool" teenagers are usually all about being "mature".

Well, yeah, that's true. Still, I can't imagine the "cool" teens thinking that the outfit Carmelita wore in The Grim Grotto isn't childish. In order to be accepted in the "cool crowd", you're pretty much expected to give up all stereotypically "kiddie" stuff. You're not suppose to like what your parents like, but you're also not supposed to like what little kids like.

True. But keep in mind that the Snicket-verse is no ordinary universe. People get picked on just for being orphaned or ambidexterous.
Also, I don't think Carmelita is popular at all. I think she deluded herself into thinking she's more popular than she actually is.

People get picked on for being orphaned in the real world. Not sure about ambidextrous, but it wouldn't surprise me if it happened sometimes. (People certainly have been picked on for being left-handed). And anyhow, the mocking of Kevin's ambidexterity is a device to make the freak-show work; it's not clear it would happen in ordinary life.
As for Carmelita - well, perhaps she's instinctively immature but manages to suppress it when she's at school, letting it out when she's with her indulgent uncle or the even more indulgent Esme. I'd take her to be quite close in age to the Baudelaires - my guess is that Prufrock Prep (which appears only to have two teachers) doesn't have children of all ages, but only eleven upwards or thereabouts.

Yeah, Hermes, I guess you're right. She probably just acted immature when she was around adults, in order to get attention. However, I still think she's about a year younger than Klaus.
As for the ages of the other characters, I generally agree with Very Funky Disco.

16 -20(1992-1988): 1.Quagmires - I imagine Isadora and Duncan to be short( Isadora is 5'1 and Duncan is 5'4 or 5'5), so they seemed to be 13 or 14 but they were 15 when they met Baudelaires. So, they are 1 year older then Violet. 2.All 3 freaks (I am crazy! But it is not too make the end too weird) 3. Edgar Poe( one year older than Violet). 4. For awhile, Wikipedia did have all three "freaks" listed as teenagers - but I think they're all well into their adulthood.

Sunny being two years old is four in The End. She'd be an adult by age 18 in 1965.
Count Olaf is 57-58 throughout the series, born 1891. His hair was auburn red as a child but started to turn grey in his early 20's.
Fiona is a year older than Violet being born in 1932, making her 16-17 during the Grim Grotto.

I don't think Carmelita would be as popular at her school, if she was twelve but acted younger. After all, the "cool" teenagers are usually all about being "mature". Carmelita wasn't popular at all and she obviously doesn't care if her peers think she's mature or not.

Yes, there is little sign in the books that C is popular (the show is different, of course), and she certainly isn't popular among the Snow Scouts. I guess people assume she is because her arrogance fits the 'Popular Girl' stereotype, but while Popular Girls may be arrogant, it doesn't follow that everyone who is arrogant is popular. (And of course being actually popular is different from being a Popular Girl anyway.)

I been thinking recently about the adult characters ages in ASOUE. Mainly about Lemony's age in the actual series, which I always thought that he would be in either his late 30's or early 40's around that time. Presumably 37-38 since Lemony faked his death age 23 a year at least before Violet was born. 23 + 14 = 37.
Beatrice being a year younger than Lemony would likely have been 36 in TBB. Which is interesting because 36 is considered an unlucky number in Judaism. Plus since Daniel Handler himself is Jewish that would make sense. Plus everyone apparently is Jewish in the book series.
With Jacques and Kit being older siblings (two years as believed by fans), they would be both 40 before their deaths. Now being 40 and pregnant with Beatrice II for Kit maybe sceptical considering how most women in their 40's go through menopause between the ages of 45 and 55. It still would be possible since premature menopause at age 40 would still be able to have children by then.
The Denouement Triplets and Count Olaf are in their early 40's. Denouements being 41 in TPP and Olaf possibly 42 (looks older due to years of villainy).
This what we have so far:
(Main):
Beatrice I (36) Bertrand (37?) Lemony (37-38) Jacques & Kit (40) Denouements (41) Olaf (41-42)
(Others):
Esme (34-35 if she was born 2 years after Beatrice) Georgina (Same age group as Esme) Jerome (Either 38 or 40 depending) Mr Poe (Probably 5-7 years older than Lemony aged 44-45) Josephine (Possibly late 40's) Monty (Mid or Early 50's since he studied herpetology for 40 years) Justice (Same age range as Monty) Bass and Remora (65, if they started teaching age 18 for 47 years/18+47=65) Sinister Duo (Early or mid 60's) Hal and Ishmael (Much older by 30 or 40 years, 70-100 years old)
