Hold it! Going back a couple of posts for a sec - the pirate novel is really finished? There were times I wondered if that was scientifically possible.

And it only took a decade. Or so.
On the question mark: I agree it's symbolic in itself, but I also can see why people would view it as a callback to the Great Unknown. While I don't think the Great Unknown is literally lurking beneath the waters in that illustration, I think it serves as a reminder that the future is unknown; anything could happen now to the Baudelaires. Likewise, the Great Unknown symbolizes the larger plot of life and all its mysterious assets. So, the illustration could encompass both meanings at once, without having any literal presence whatsoever.
There is one aspect of the image that's always bothered me, though. In the center of the curve of the question mark, the water is shaded, though this does not contribute to the shape being conveyed. Then I realized, if you tilt your read to the left a tad, it looks a bit like an eye.

I think that's just the tail end of the coil. It's slightly tighter than the loop on a regular question mark.

I'd prefer it weren't disconnected from the rest, but I can see it now. It's more stylistic this way.
