Overlord Tragedy approached the podium. He was about to make a startling announcement, and he knew it. The people of 667 were nervous. Whenever Tragedy spoke to the population as a whole, it was never good. It was always to show how much power he had over them as citizens, or sadistically make their lives miserable for no reason. Ever since he had become overlord 10 years ago, the citizens feared every moment of their lives, but none were worse than when he actually wanted to speak with them. He walked up to the microphone, and began.
“Dear Citizens of 667 Dark Avenue. It has come to my attention that the 10th anniversary of me being your benevolent ruler will be occurring soon. As a celebration, I have decided upon a fun festivity. I will have twenty four of you chosen at random. Twelve males, twelve females. I will place you in an arena. There, you shall fight to the death, with one winner returning as the champion. I came up with this idea completely on my own, so please leave the talk about me copying some book or movie out of this. It’s simply not true.”
The citizens were outraged. “You can’t do this to us!” They screamed. “There’s no way we would ever agree to do this. You’ve gone too far!” Tragedy looked on and smiled. He had anticipated this. He understood that if he just sent them in to fight, he would risk an uprising. There was no way they would agree to this, even with the extreme power he held over them. “Now listen,” said Tragedy at the microphone once again. “You didn’t think that the winner would come out of all this unrewarded, did you? Nonsense!” Tragedy stopped speaking for a second, to add some dramatic tension. He had them hooked, now he just needed to reel them in. “The winner of the Dark Games, which is what I shall be calling this event from now on, will win a SPECTACULAR prize. A much coveted prize that will change the life of the victor forever. For you see, the winner of the Dark games, will become your new admin.”

Gripping tale. Tragedy does often features a sadistic overlord in 667 fics, doesn't he?

They wouldn't do that, would they? There's bound to be some power-hungry person plotting to win so they can become the next cruel dictator. I <# this.

The crowd was murmuring with excitement now. The chance to become admin? Not only would the winner have their life changed for the better, but none of the citizens would have to deal with overlord Tragedy again. “Let us begin the drawing of the names,” said Tragedy. “Before I start, I would just like to say a few words. I hope all those picked will try their hardest in the arena, and make me and the rest of the citizens proud. Also, may your odds be ever in your flavor.” Everybody looked puzzlingly at Tragedy as he explained “No, we couldn’t get the rights to that dumb catchphrase.” And with that, the drawing of the names began.
The first name drawn was Fancy. Fancy was at one point the former Queen of 667 Dark Avenue, but after being betrayed by Tragedy, lost her crown and was humiliated. If she was able to win and reclaim the throne, she could use her new power to humiliate him as revenge. She knew she had a chance to win, as she was experienced in Pokémon battles and could use that knowledge to help her somehow.
The second name drawn was Willis. At one point he was Tragedy’s right hand man and had aspirations to help rule 667. Tragedy made sure this would never happen, often taunting Willis by promoting other less qualified people while he remained in his low position. Willis was enraged about the Dark Games, but smiled when he realized he could finally have the promotion he so deserved.
The third name drawn was Shelly. Shelly was a formerly famous author from Dark Avenue, but her work was often ridiculed by Overlord Tragedy, and so nobody else would read it in fear of upsetting him. Soon she grew poor because nobody was purchasing her books again. If she won the games, she could write a memoir all about it, with the final chapter about her imprisoning Tragedy forever.
The fourth name drawn was Dante. The wisest citizen of all of 667 Dark Avenue, Dante had the respect of everyone, including Lord Tragedy. He was high on Tragedy’s list of allies, and yet, Dante had always felt some resentment towards Tragedy. Instead of being the stern but fair overlord that Dante would be, Tragedy used his power in silly, unreasonable ways. Dante wouldn’t play along with the games, which meant he would never be seen as an equal in Tragedy’s eyes. And if he won the games, he wouldn’t see Tragedy as an equal either.
The fifth name drawn was Sherry Ann. Sherry Ann was a close friend of Dante, and she saw how Tragedy’s lack of acknowledgement for everything Dante did for the citizens would grate on him. She also hated the fact that the rigged voting of “667 Citizen of the year” voting went to Hermes, when she received the same amount of votes. She knew she could win with her smarts and allying with some of the others, but was unafraid to betray them when she needed to.
The sixth name drawn was Hermes. There were audible gasps, as Hermes was the oldest member of Dark Avenue since the tragic death of Dear Dairy. Hermes was wise as well, and beloved by all who saw him as a grandfather. Even Tragedy named him Citizen of the year. But the elderly were also treated as second class citizens at 667 Dark Avenue, and so Hermes wanted to win so he could finally show Tragedy what it felt like to be looked down upon.
The seventh name drawn was Pandora. Pandora had long lusted over Tragedy, but he never returned the feelings, and often insulted her. She would insult him back, but deep down her love for him would simmer. She felt that the Dark Games were created solely so she could prove to Tragedy she was worthy. She would win the crown, and take her seat beside him as king and queen.
The eighth name drawn was BSam. BSam was one of the most popular residents of 667 Dark Avenue, and because of this Tragedy mocked him constantly. BSam would mock him back, which was a risky move and often led to BSam being whipped or imprisoned. But BSam never gave up his principles, refusing to ever grovel towards Tragedy, even if it would make his life easier. His great strength, and great desire to destroy Tragedy, would make him a tough competitor in the arena.
The ninth name drawn was Very Funky Disco. Also known as VFD, she was 667’s resident movie buff, loving movies featuring Michael J Fox the most. After numerous movie parties began to make Tragedy worry of a potential uprising, he banned all movies from Dark Avenue, with the exception of Jingle All the Way, which he used to torture the citizens with repeated viewing. VFD had feared she would never see her beloved MJF again. But now all she had to do was win a tournament, and she could force Tragedy to watch Teen Wolf over and over.
The tenth name drawn was Bryan. Bryan was a fairly anonymous citizen, who always tried to fit in more. He would attempt this in fruitless ways, such as spoiling parts of the Hunger Games while other people were writing stories, but he always meant well. Tragedy would always taunt him though, and other members were too afraid to stand up for him or befriend him, in fear of becoming part of Tragedy’s wrath themselves. Bryan clenched his fists, readying himself for the fight that would come.
The eleventh name drawn was shruti. Shruti, upset about being drawn as a female because gender roles don’t mean anything, had a long standing grudge with Tragedy. Tragedy taunted Shruti constantly about changing her name, which was currently Sloka. Tragedy made sure to sound an alarm anytime Sloka tried to use the men’s room, which embarrassed Sloka to no end. Sloka was ready to finally end the harassment, and force Tragedy to finally call her Mister Sloka.
The twelfth name drawn was Cybermystery. Cybermystery was Tragedy’s second in command, and he was visibly shocked that he was sent in. It was no surprise to anyone else though, who knew how little respect Tragedy had for Cybermystery. He gave him fake assignment in the hopes of humiliating Cybermystery. However, Cybermystery was constantly looking for Tragedy’s approval, and so always put 100 percent into these demeaning tasks. Just as he would put 100 percent into killing everyone else in the arena, and returning to his proud king.
Next time… The final 12 names.
