I've increasingly been thinking that a direct adaptation of any of Snicket's work wouldn't be entirely suitable, either. I am fairly sure we would accept something largely different from the original material if it was written by or in close contact with Handler himself.

The thing is, you could imagine a reboot being really good if it was in the right hands... namely, with a talented director and Handler pouring their hearts into it. Unfortunately, it probably won't happen anytime soon, but a more mature and less kiddie-themed effort could be very cool.
My pick for a director? Terrence Malick. Just kidding!

I always thought ASoUE would be right up Tim Burton's street.

I think, at some point Burton did want to direct ASoUE with Johnny Depp as Olaf. I'd have loved seeing that.

Helena Boham Carter could been Esme. And everything would be right with the world.

What's this? A Tim Burton film with Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter in it? Has the world gone mad? On the subject, a director who's good at 'impersonal' narratives would be good- like Jon Jones, who did the Diary of Anne Frank.

Now that you mention it, Tim Burton WOULD be a great director ! In my opinion, a sort of mini serie would also be nice, since it could allow details to be included more ...

Helena Boham Carter could been Esme. And everything would be right with the world. Which is funny because Helena played Beatrice in the actual film. P.S: Sorry I bumped an old thread....
