On which note, I've just realised that in over three years of this thread's existence, nobody has mentioned the Medusoid Mycelium. I can't remember if it was on my mind or not, but it remains a fact that Olaf planned to unleash invisible death upon the entire hotel, and that's likely what the Baudelaires were really signalling against and attempting to prevent; not just the machinations of a corrupt High Court, but Olaf's plan to simply kill everyone in the building by an alternative and much less visible method. By setting the fire and stopping the elevator at every floor to warn of it, the Baudelaires prevented Olaf from unleashing the Medusoid Mycelium and provided a threat which was easier to detect and escape. We've been writing this thread as if it was a matter of death by fire versus death by society, but actually it was death by fire versus death by fungus. I can't believe we all forgot to mention that. It's such a crucial point -- well done for noticing its absence from the thread!

Yes, the mycelium is clearly important. Sunny casts confusion over the issue by saying 'signal', as if that were the main reason for starting the fire, when you might well think the mycelium was more significant; the mycelium is mentioned as a reason for the 'Preludio' plan but not for the fire itself. It's reasonable, though, to think that the Baudelaires also had it in mind. And it is easier to get away from a fire than a fungus, and also easier to stop its spread.

I can't believe the MM never crossed my mind. The people in the hotel may have felt the effects of the mushroom, but wouldn't have necessarily known that it meant they were dying. I'm hoping that in TPPP2, one of the Baudelaires will give this as an explanation. It's crucial that viewers understand the Baudelaire's intetnions, since otherwise, it might make it harder for them to feel sorry for the Baudelaires when they're dying from the MM in TE.

Netflix did indeed have the Baudelaires make it clear that this their motivation for setting the fire. I wonder if the makers of this show actually saw some of these posts.

I assumed it was to get everyone to evacuate from the fungus, because fire is a heck of a lot less subtle than fungus.
