you're welcome to elaborate on that. I see how they're different in theory, because of freedom of expression, but in action i think the line becomes very blurry more than half the time.

legalization means regulation in this case - it's a dangerous thing, probably always has been - but control of the system & proper unions could go a long way. in other words - try to get rid of the pimps (the real problem) instead of blaming the practice itself (if performed between two consenting adults & both know the risks of disease, etc.) it's the human trafficking that i despise, not the profession. i've no religious objections to a woman doing what she will with her body, so long as she knows the consequences & risks. so if we allow for unions & regulation - probably easier when we consider brothels vs streetwalkers - wouldn't the situation be more secure for any woman who chooses to pursue the profession? but if they don't join the union, the rules presently enforced would apply. either way, the sex instinct - which, only in my experience, drives a man to hire a prostitute - would be relieved in a manner which doesn't expose young women to horrendous circumstances on the streets.

Reviving this because it's an interesting issue
I'm pretty much in favor of legalization with but wary about the human trafficking aspect of it I dunno Maybe with the regulation Sam suggests there would be less danger of that

There is an interesting passage in Chester Brown's Paying For It, that I mentioned in the OP, about regulation of prostitution.
It makes a distinction between legalization and decriminalization which is not thoroughly/only briefly explained, so I'm still kind of ignorant on the difference, I think. Nevertheless it's basically about regulation vs no regulation in prostitution.
I just looked it up again and I don't think I can sum it up very well, so I'm gonna go ahead and transcribe it here:

the author seems to be making some connections that don't seem logical to me. but i'm also having trouble summing up those arguments
