The world's oldest profession. Some people can't imagine it being legal (e.g. USA), for others it's simply a job (e.g. Germany). In recent news, a top court in Canada has stricken down anti-prostitution laws, and brothels could be a reality in Canada by Christmas 2014. On a side note, ATWQ's Seth's acclaimed cartoonist friend, Chester Brown, has made quite an impressing graphic novel on the topic (I've only started reading it). Whatever you may personally think of this line of work, do you think it should be legal? Do you think it would minimize the hazards when illegal, like violence/abuse of sex workers or the risk of the spreading of AIDS? Or is it immoral? Why? Do you think it may decrease rape? Is it a rape trade itself? Shouldn't women have the freedom of choice? Or isn't it freedom because of economic pressure? Discuss.

I think it should be legal in certain environments like brothels, but I'm not eloquent enough to explain why without sounding like a blockhead.

I really don't know. The whole idea of prostitution is really repugnant to me, but I'm kind of leaning toward the same argument as with abortion - it'll happen whether it's legal or not, but it'll be safer for the women involved if it is legal. But again, I don't really have a strong opinion either way. One thing I do think should happen is if they're going to make it illegal the focus should be on prosecuting the people who pay for sex, rather than the sex workers themselves like it is now.

It should be legal even though I wouldn't avail of it.

They should unionise and get certain job rights across the board.

I'm really not sure about this. I guess that in an ideal world where the prostitutes aren't forced into it because of their economic situation and actually chose that because that's what they like doing, then I'd be fine with it. But knowing that's not how it goes, at least for the most part, I'm not okay with legalizing it. I agree that the prostitutes shouldn't be arrested, but instead of legalizing prostitution, maybe their "pimps" should be arrested and some sort of program to help the prostitutes find a different job should be created. I understand that that would probably only happen in an ideal world as well, though.
I'm not well informed about this so my opinions are probably very naïve.

Nah I think you're on the right track.
Sort of combine that with unionising to 'legitimise' the industry so those who choose or are forced (not in a slave way, but in an economic nessessity way) to work in it have decent conditions, workplace rights etc.
This is with the caveat that I don't know heaps about the issue, so I'm probably missing some related issues, but so far it seems to make sense time at least.

On the other hand, I'm still a bit iffy as to if it should really be allowed, but like abortions, it's not my body, so should I really have a say.

What I find kind of ridiculous (in countries where it's illegal), is that pretty much as soon as a camera starts rolling, prostitution becomes p0rn and suddenly it's legal, because it's something you can tax and governments wanna get paid. not to mention that this grey area/loophole is easily exploited by people.

Regulate the industry. That was the word I was looking for. Then it can be taxed and there will be workplace protection etc.
