The Little Princess
Once upon a time there was a very small princess who lived in the top of a very small tower. Although she enjoyed eating her miniscule breakfasts and her itsy-bitsy lunches, she eventually became very lonely. One day she said to her mother, who was also very small, “Mommy, why can’t I have anyone else my age to play with?”
The mother glared at her daughter with very small eyes and said crossly, “Don’t be ridiculous, my dear—everyone else in the world is very large! They would eat you up, so you must remain safe in your tower and never let anyone else come near you! Also, don’t end your sentences with a preposition!”
Well, the princess was quite saddened by this news, but she apprehensively went about her usual business and tried not to be too sad that there was no one else in the world to be her friend. She was forced to keep this attitude for many years until one day there was a tap on her window.
“Hello?” called the little princess as she peeked her little head out the tower. There was nobody there. “I say, hello?” she called again. That was when a head just as small as hers popped out from behind a bush at the bottom of the tower. This head belonged to a small boy, who happened to be a prince.
“Hullo there!” called the little prince. “I’d appreciate a lift!”
The very small princess was so aghast that she simply stood there for a moment, looking down on her male counterpart. But eventually she came to her senses and ran to get a rope suitable for climbing. Once the very small prince had finished scrambling up the slippery stone tower side, he collapsed in a heap on the very small princess’s very small rug.
“Wherever did you come from?” said the princess, with wonder in her voice. “My mother told me there wasn’t a single other tiny person in the world! She told me everyone else was a scary giant!”
The prince grinned. “Well,” he said mischievously, “Your mother was right.” And before the princess could scream or even flinch, he grabbed onto a hidden zipper on his scalp and undid the little-person costume to reveal his true self—an enormous, slobbering monster! Then he gobbled up the very small princess in one bite.
