Even if you freak out when you see him, I'm sure he'll say something awesome!
Apparently this girl freaked out in front of him because she was depressed but his books made her happy so she wanted to thank him but couldn't say it properly. Then in her book he wrote, "For Bridget, who has suffered enough." I'm not sure if this is 100% accurate though, but if it were, that would be completely amazing.

I believe it! He's the most radiant person you could possibly meet. I have a sneaking suspicion that he must have recognized me when, a few months after a signing in KC, he was also in STL, and I went to both. Instead of the usual "For ___, with all due respect" he wrote "with admiration and dread."

It would be my dream to meet him, but sadly, I'm too far away and not allowed to go to those places where he's in. By the way, what did you say to him when you saw him twice? If what you said is too personal, then I am so sorry.

I'll write my summary of the event in here as opposed to making a new thread, as I don't have a whole lot to say. I sat in the back row and befriended some of the other childless adults in attendance. Not surprisingly the majority of attendants were children. One little boy wore a suit. A few minutes before things started Daniel Handler sort of wandered around in the crowd, going up and down the aisles without saying anything to anyone. He was announced, and gave a a presentation on his "5 moral lessons". I'm unsure if these lessons have been categorized by anyone who's attended a past event, so I'll list them here. 1.Be Lonely 2.Read Upsetting Things 3.Join a Secret Organization 4.Ask All The Wrong Questions 5.Leave Suddenly Each lesson corresponded with an activity of sorts as well. Be Lonely was making an audience member stand up alone in front of everyone else, Read Upsetting Things was reading an excerpt, Join A Secret Organization was having crowd members read a book passage as a secret code, Ask all the wrong questions was a sort of trivia game of him asking fun true or false questions. and Leave Suddenly was him running off the stage. After that, some people lined up for the book signing. He walked by the back row where we were sitting and saw that we had taken notes, commenting that he was impressed. Pretty great. Anyways, my group was called in line. My interaction with him was essentially basic pleasantries, and me expressing my admiration for his work. They had noted that while posed photos would not be allowed, a worker would be on hand to take an action shot. I didn't notice said worker so when I was at the front I asked the man next to me to take a picture. Handler heard this and then posed for a photo, so I guess I gamed the system? I'm sorry for not obtaining any new discoveries (sadly I've yet to even read the new book myself) but overall an enjoyable evening.

I haven't heard that variation of his presentation before - though of course it sounds like his usual brand of humour, and plenty of fun, as much at his own expense as everyone else's. Thank you for the summary. It's good to hear that you enjoyed yourself and could game the photo system; in fact, knowing Handler's mischievousness, if he was aware at all that the system was being gamed, he was probably pleased to be complicit.

It was pretty amusing. Handler is a natural in conversing with children. One interesting thing I picked up was that he confirmed that the BB statue can indeed be used for something, and the clue for what that is is in the word "bombinating" (oh, and he gave that answer when asked why Hangfire wanted the statue). Hmm, maybe it has something to do with moths rather than the lighthouse.

Because of that answer, I've officially switched my allegiance to the "Bombinating kazoo" theory. Actually, I just had an idea which might not work, but it's interesting: what if the statue functions somehow as a noisemaker? Perhaps it makes a bombinating sound when some appropriate device is placed inside it, or when air is blown through it just right-- that would be fitting given its name and mythical background. It could even have been constructed to imitate the sound of the real beast. Come to think of it, that could also explain the paper-- the comparison to wrappings on cookies suggests that it's wax paper, which is used in kazoos. I went back and checked the description of the Bombinating Beast in ?1 in relation to this. The hole in the bottom of the statue isn't just a hole, it's a slit. I'd been picturing it as a vertical slit, like in a piggy bank - but what if it's horizontal, like the mouthpiece of certain wind instruments...?

So, a dog whistle for moths? Although I have a hard time believing that Hangfire would make such a big deal out of it if it was only for something as trivial as a buzzing sound that may or may not work.

Oh, I don't think it's for moths. You need to go back and consult your copy of Stain'd Myths.

I found it interesting that Handler said that Dashiell Qwerty was "a librarian you can trust" (~29:10), if only as an example in passing. I wouldn't necessarily trust him, especially after the conversation in ?3.
Slightly after, when he was trying to hedge, he said the S (in Theodora's name) stands for "...some first name Snicket doesn't know" (~30:30) - does this mean that we're not going to find out what it is? There's the remote possibility that Snicket doesn't know the name but we could still find it out (e.g. a letter in a supplementary book sent neither to nor by Snicket), but that wouldn't be ?4. Or was Handler just thinking on the spot and ended up saying something that isn't necessarily true? (You could justify it in-universe by saying that Handler didn't know that Snicket did know what the S stands for.)
The answer to the movie vs. book was a great analogy, but didn't touch upon the fact that the movie tells a different story, and essentially contradicts (or at least misleads) the true events according to the books. I don't really think there's a canon answer to that - "based on a true story" might work but it doesn't seem like an excuse Handler/Snicket would use.

I take it 'doesn't know' means at the time the story takes place, so it may still be revealed in Book 4. Though it's also possible that it will never be revealed and we are meant to work it out; if she dies in book 4, then, given that she knew Bertrand, there is a strong case for 'Sunny', and it may be that we are meant to infer that.

Maybe the BB statue is a bomb.

Congratulations! I know it's still nearly two months away, but I hope you enjoy encountering Mr. Snicket (if he shows up, mind).
