I agree that the "evil uncle" is just Olaf; it's a common mistake, common enough that they might conceivably canonise it to smooth things out, although Olaf's canonical famiilal connection is clearly funnier for being so complex (and indeed the Baudelaires' increasingly distant relations to their relatives are a running joke). Since you bring it up, Hermes, I shouldn't be surprised if they contextualise Sir a bit better, though. I can't wait and I am happy it is not a fake because Daniel Handler and the official Lemony Snicket social media pages also posted it. The best part is the age ranges are fitting. Though I am most excited that they are going to start filming in March so in theory it can take roughly 4-6 months of post production to finish all of the FX shots and edit everything so we should have it released either by October 2016 or December 2016. Well, you know, while that's a pretty plausible outline, I don't think we yet have much of an idea of how much they're going to film - not just in terms of episodes and durations, but in volumes of the series! Which personally is what I'd like to hear more about right now. I doubt they're going to be able to crank out all thirteen books in a single production run.

Which personally is what I'd like to hear more about right now. I doubt they're going to be able to crank out all thirteen books in a single production run. Their are plenty of ways Netflix could handle these adaptions but looking at past series such as Jessica Jones, OITNB and Hemlock Grove they usually order roughly 10-13 episodes for the first season of any of shows they produce. We could easily get into debates on adaptation but for time it will be the usually 60 minute format. So they have a lot of ground to cover. How I think they might do it though if I was to have a magical say on how the first season could be structured. The first season could easily over the first five books because in a story structure for television each book could easily be just an episode with the climax being the Quagmires being whisked away and only have time telling them "VFD" leaving people to speculate on what that means. Because the first five books are not that complicated in terms of explanation of certain themes, characters and location that could easily be covered in an hour format. Where as book six and on have very complex themes as well as the books are longer with more characters, locations and not in the linear format as book 1-5. If I would predict how many seasons so far that is unknown but roughly three seasons for a book series as long as this would be sufficient. Again though this is all my speculation as I have thought about this for a while and coming from a film background have a bit of understanding of one possibility but they could take a totally different approach because this is the first book to television show Netflix has produced and both Daredevil and Jessica Jones don't follow any particular closely to their source material but a rough idea of origins and making sure they are in constant contact with the MCU and the other shows. Whereas this is in it's own world unless Netflix branches off and puts in All the Wrong Questions later.

I'm guessing thirteen episodes a season, it is a recurring theme after all. I'm guessing this will take two seasons to complete the series (After all TVV would make a great season one finale).
I'm excited they're filming in Vancouver. I'm assuming they chose it specifically so they could shoot on location more, which I think will be for the better. As much as I loved the movie I do think it relied on sound stages a bit too heavily. Vancouver seems to be architecturally diverse and looking at images online it actually does look a lot like the city I always imagined when I read the books (Many of those beaches would be perfect for Briny Beach). Granted some things will obviously have to be shot elsewhere or on stages or even created digitally, after all Lemony Snicket's world is populated by many buildings that look far more different then anything in real life.
It is kind of interesting to think that Vancouver could become a tourist destination for Snicket fans. That's definitely a pro to shooting on location, those places actually exist in some form rather than just as a set somewhere. Adds a bit of realism to it all.

Something else to consider is how much the character of Lemony will feature in each episode, as that will impact where season one ennds. I can see an interesting switch off between just having him be a voiceover, seeing him writing and seeing him investigating or all three, depending on where certain episodes fall in the show plot. Since so many great moments in the series take place via narration, they'll want to give some Lemony lines to other characters, but he'll have to feature.

Interesting thoughts, suda21 and strangely. I agree that thirteen episodes per season would be perfect for obvious reasons (maybe a fourteenth for the last season?), but it's hard to say how much ground they could cover with that, especially without a clear idea of episode length. Cutting a first series at either TAA or TVV sounds pretty good; TVV would obviously cover the first seven books of the series, leaving a second series to cover six longer volumes, whereas cutting a first series at TAA would suggest further seasons of four volumes, so TEE through TCC and then TSS through The End, and while TVV is the perfect mid-season cliffhanger, TCC has the most literal cliffhanger ending. There are lots of different ways you can slice it, and I don't know enough about television production to make an accurate guess, but it's really interesting to consider the possibilities.

If this is being worked on by Daniel Handler, can we take new plot elements as canon?

We can take it as Netflix's-ASoUE-canon, not book-canon. Handler has mentioned a couple of times that he doesn't have a problem with an adaptation being different than the source material, since a different medium has other things working for it.

If this is being worked on by Daniel Handler, can we take new plot elements as canon? I remember reading when they first announced the Netflix series that Daniel Handler would have the same power as George R.R. Martin on Game of Thrones and that everything has to be approved by him before it can be put in front of the camera. So everything will be cannon in a sense. It could take another approach like how Neil Gaimen when he rewrote Coraline how he vastly changed the story so it could fit more of a movie version rather then the version when he wrote the book. So Daniel could add things that would fit better on the screen but I believe he is just supervising with the script.

This is quite an exciting opportunity for those eligible, and resembles similar open casting calls in the past for roles in Harry Potter and Star Wars. Does anyone happen to know how those went? Was anyone hired for Star Wars through the open audition calls, or was it just a PR thing?
