There's definitely kids out there who knock it out of the park. Saoirse Ronan in Atonement was one of them.
That being said, just based off Weissman's performance in Supergirl, she's not on that level. She's far from terrible though, and there's no doubt she's learning. I'm optimistic.

The only thing I'm annoyed about is that our four leads are white. Yay. They better amp up the diversity with the rest of the cast. I want more diversity too, but I can't say I'm surprised about Violet and Klaus. Netflix does want this series to be more like the books and the illustrations are pretty iconic in their own right, so it's not terribly surprising that they hired talent that bore a resemblance to the Helquist illustrations. Fortunately very few characters were actually shown in the illustrations and many were illustrated with vague features, so likely the extended cast will be more diverse. Yvette Nicole Brown for Aunt Josephine please! Looking at Instagram and IMDB the resemblance between Weissman and Browning is uncanny. Netflix must have pulled a Jurassic Park and spared no expense as they've clearly cloned Emily Browning. But tampering in God's domain is no less than I expected from the people who brought us a revival of Arrested Development and Gilmore Girls. I just didn't realize their supernatural reach. Hopefully they'll be kind overlords.

I'm getting used to the thought of these two much faster than to the thought of NPH as Count Olaf. I agree that the looks are in place - Weismann looks particularly close to the illustrations, if even closer to Emily Browning. I hope their costumes will have the illustrations in mind - not necessarily the same, but a few nods of acknowledgement would be nice.
I haven't seen either of them in anything, so I can't say anything about their acting. Hoping it'll be good!

That's what I was thinking too. Also, it's hard to have the leads be diverse when they're all blood-related. Anyway, yeah, it'd be great if they diversified the rest of the cast. Snicket rarely ever specified the race of any of the characters anyway, and I'd say the character's appearances are mostly defined by accessories and clothing so that's what's important to stick to, in my mind. Racial identity is wide open.

I hope their costumes will have the illustrations in mind - not necessarily the same, but a few nods of acknowledgement would be nice. Yeah, it would be hard to follow the illustrations all the time. Violet for instance wears that purple coat the majority of the time and in a show it would be nonsensical if she were wearing that even indoors or in good weather, so odds are that they'll expand the Baudelaire's wardrobe beyond what Helquist did (Though he did try in the paperbacks to give them more variation, I sometimes wonder how their style would have evolved if they'd continued that). But a nod at least to the illustrations is definitely appreciated. I loved the costumes in the movie, but felt like they could have at least referenced the books costumes.

It would be awesome if Brett Helquist would be the co-set- and/or -costume designer on the show, but then again, maybe that would be too much faithfulness to the books. But I love to imagine it.

I like them, more the guy than the girl. For a second I thought it was Emily Browning again. I hope they give the kid glasses please please please.
Also their faces look good together, like siblings, not like in the movie.

Um, four cast members? Olaf, Violet, Klaus...who am I missing? I'm impressed that Klaus's sole acting credit is in an opera. Very few operas feature children and only for a short period of time, so this bodes well for his concintration and patience. I watch Supergirl as well, and the actress has a minor role, but has so far portrayed being impulsive, worried about adult matters adults are keeping her out of, and cried in a few departure scenes, which is certainly good practice for Violet. Also, she would've been somewhat younger when all those scenes (and whatever others she may appear in) were shot, which may be something to keep in mind for negative impressions. I like what I've seen of her. THERE'S NEW GILMORE? !!! I take it you're a fan? It's going to be four hour-long episodes (with no commercials, so that means more dialogue) and each episode will cover a season, so we'll get a full year's worth of story. The Palidinos will be writing, Scott Patterson, and all three Gilmore girls have said they're in, and many other cast members have said in the past that they'd do a continuation if the Palidinos were behind it.

Having seen none of their work, I can't judge their talent, but on appearances alone they look like they will fit the roles pretty well. Not exactly how I picture Violet and Klaus, but then that's to be expected -- and I always like actors/actresses to be slightly 'off' from my vision of a character, just so, for example, MY Violet remains particularly mine, as it were. That said, they're not too far off, and I think they could definitely suit the roles well. All in all, very excited to see them tackle their respective parts!
Also, glad I'm not the only one who feels they must have got some of Emily Browning's DNA in order to create Malina Weissman ... uncanny resemblance!

No, pevalwen, I'm pretty sure a picture of a squashed Emily Browning would look rather different.

I am dead, that is amazing news! I absolutely cannot wait for this now. Blessed be netflix! Also re: casting, these kids look the part alright, and I'm sure they'll be fine to act the part. If not, at least we get a mess Handler was involved in this time

On child actors: how about Hailee Steinfeld in the Coen Brothers' 'True Grit?' Wonderful. (Incidentally, she was set to play Min, back when a Why We Broke Up film seemed possible.) Visually, they each look they're part pretty well! Let's see if we can get Klaus some glasses this time, eh? Seconded (both statements) And let's hope they can act. But ultimately they need to be charming. The Baudelaires are charming. To anyone who noticed I used the wrong 'their' -- a typo! I understand homophone errors can invoke symptoms like nausea and vomiting. Apologies.
