It's called a ball here too but it's a smaller thing here I think, and also you don't go there with a partner.
At my school we also had a christmas ball every year where everyone had to go, and where you officially needed a partner, but I never had one.

I had a dance partner for the second ball we had (one in Year 11 and on in 13) where we took a couple dancing lessons beforehand, but it wasn't this big thing like in the US. The party was alright, I didn't get too drunk, thankfully.

I didn't go because I thought it was dumb and I don't like dresses. Or boys for that matter, though I didn't realize it at the time.

What actually happens to the people who don't get a partner, are they still allowed to go there then? And if they are, is that a thing that some people really do, or would that be weird if they did?

Here we have a prom party/dinner but just that. Families, teachers and close people pay an insane amount of money to go to that salsaty dinner, then the old people leave around 12 and the teenagers and young people stay and have a party 'til dawn.
What we have as a stronger tradition on highschool graduation is a trip to a nice, snowy city full of parties in the south of the country called Bariloche. Everyone who's graduating pays another insane amount of money to go there during Winter and get drunk and do stupid salsa. I didn't do it, instead I went to Buenos Aires with my best friend hah.

It's called going stag, and it's acceptable for the less formal dances but I never knew anyone who went to prom without a date, the whole point of prom was having a date and fancy matching clothes.
