I don't understand the hard handed criticism of NPH based on 5 words in such a short teaser. It's a flash in a pan. In the same way someone who is rather attractive but is caught off guard when photographed can look unappealing in a the resulting photo, that line without context shouldn't be so heavily scrutinized.
NPH is a gifted actor who is versatile. I don't know if any here has seen Gone Girl, but if you need proof of that watch that movie.

lol a 53 second teaser, not even a trailer, teasing what will be a series that is approximately 7-8 hours in length has given you enough insight to say it will suck? How is a trailer defined? I would have thought that this was one, as unlike the previous one it actually contains scenes from the series. It is described as a teaser on the video it's self by Netflix. To answer your question, though, a trailer is usually more candid about what the plot is. This is a character teaser about Olaf and how other characters perceive him. Those who have not read the books still do not know what the series is about based on that alone.

I really think NPH put the creepy in Olaf, at least in the little bit we get to see in the trailer.

Well the tattoo I suppose is alright; an amalgamation of Helquist v. 1 and Helquist v.2

I really, really, really like the look of the tattoo. It's weird, in a way that the kids would only really be able to describe it as "an eye" - which is exactly what it's supposed to look like at first. I was never too crazy about some of the common tattoo designs floating around (one looks too much like an eye, another has linework that's *too* clean, and so on and so forth) - but this one is a bit crappy and that's what I like about it. It's not supposed to really be a well-done tattoo and that's why the almost hand-drawn look really works for me.
Does anyone have an idea of who all the characters are that we can hear (but not see) in this trailer? Does anyone recognize the voices?

lol, Monty's Maze is not a very hard one, is it? At least if you enter from the Southeast or Northwest. Any other way makes it impossible to get to the center. I guess it's a sacrifice for the cool eye design. I do like the idea of a maze in the first place, though. Very The Shining. Especially with Stephano roaming it in that one shot.

Well you're not supposed to have a map of a maze when you go into them. So technically anyone who doesn't know the right entrance would still get lost.

True on the first point, but I'd disagree that it's a maze you get lost in for long. You either get to the center easily or not at all, but either way you'd find your way out of it rather quickly.

Does anyone have an idea of who all the characters are that we can hear (but not see) in this trailer? Does anyone recognize the voices? If you watch the teaser on Netflix, the subtitles denote who is speaking each line. Klaus: Something strange is going on. Did you see the tattoo on his ankle? He's in disguise and he's trying to take us away. Jacquelyn: He'll never get away with this. Strauss: He's a vile, terrible person. Mr Poe: He's a thief and a murderer and so far has completely escaped capture. Josephine: Villain! Wretch! Klaus: He's horrible. Violet: Awful.

I'm really impressed. A few observations: The spyglasses are back and in full force. Olaf has one and Klaus is holding one in the blueprint scene. On the right side of the blueprint is Uncle Monty's house in detail, including the Reptile Room and the snake shaped hedges. The house itself seems to be only about a third of the size of the Reptile Room, although it does appear to have a second floor based on the stair placement inside. The Snicket investigation scenes appear to have a film grain look to them. Interesting art choice, definitely a sharp looking series. visceralfantabulousdebut.com/reptile_room.pngThis makes me wonder if we're getting two more trailers, based on the fact that each trailer so far has included a hidden VFD website leading to concept art for one book. I'm still unsure about Violet wearing pink, though this trailer has given me a greater understanding as to why they went with brighter colors for the Baudelaire's. They obviously want them to be more visually contrasted from everyone else. Seems like the kids get one main costume per book too, just like the paperback illustrations. Very interesting.

I'm kinda surprised at how upset (well, in a mild sense, I guess) people are at Violet's pink clothes (I'm counting also fans over on tumblr). It's not like ASoUE's characters (or people in general) are defined by their favourite colors.
I do have to say that Violet's actress *is* giving me a bit of concern... even more than NPH as Olaf so far. She seems too pretty (in overall appearance, incl. clothes, though not their color) to be a hands-on inventor, and of the little we've seen of the kids, she always seems to have that same Disney-wide-eyed concerned face which yells child-like overacting to me. This is just a first impression though, and I hope to be proven wrong the more we see of Malina Weissman.

It's not like ASoUE's characters (or people in general) are defined by their favourite colors. Well, Violet isn't typically presented as being overtly girly, so the pink coloring is strange for her. It doesn't look bad mind you, it just seems strange given the books portrayal where even wearing a hair ribbon was out of practicality rather than just style (And the thought of wearing a pink ribbon was displeasing). I'm not concerned yet. We only see her face in full in like two shots and they're both part of the same sequence of events, within minutes of each other. So, I'd expect the emotion to stay the same given the timing. Her clothing doesn't bother me (Not including the color). The sweater is a bit strange, but given that this was likely what she wore for that cold day at Briny Beach and the fact that the rest of her wardrobe was destroyed it actually makes quite a bit of sense. Based on that one bag that Violet is carrying (By the way, how did she get saddled with the bag and the baby? Really Klaus!?) I'm guessing that Mrs. Poe didn't buy them much and we all know Olaf isn't buying them anything. The behind the scenes stuff we saw of TRR earlier in the year makes me more confident as that costume was actually pretty true to the books (Although a brighter shade than we're used to for Violet). I think opinions will improve when we get a full trailer. This was basically a teaser trailer while the first one was an announcement trailer. I find it funny reading the wide variety of opinions from the various news sources. It's amazing that people can judge NPH based on the two lines (one per trailer) and one actual shot of him we see. I mean it's Daily Punctilio-esq to make a judgement of an actors entire performance based on the ten seconds of him performing that's been presented. That's like judging an entire book after reading half a sentence. Though it tells me that even the general audience has strong opinions about this property, I'm guessing due to nostalgia (Especially with the amount of "never going to outdo Jim Carrey" comments I see). It's kind of nice to see that this series is actually pretty well loved, even so many years later.

I feel like most people forget that in book 1 they only clothes the kids have are the ones that mrs. Poe buys them. And the children hate them. It isn't till book 2 till Monty buys them some clothes that they get stuff they like. Also a huge plot point in several books is the children not liking their clothes. Book 6 the suits Esme buys them. I think it will all come to play in the tv show. The drawing showed them wearing the same thing but going from what we see I think there will be more costume changes for the characters as it progresses. Also I agree I'm waiting till watch the full series to judge anything. Be cause honestly we haven't seen anything from book 3 or 4 and all we have seen from 1 and 2 is in a 1:30 trailer.

Violet's clothes don't bother me simply because we know Mrs. Poe bought all the children ugly clothes, and to Violet, pink would be ugly, so it fits. I would have more of a problem if these were clothes she'd picked out for herself, because that would be ignoring her character.
We've hardly seen her acting so far, so I don't have any particular worries -- she looks scared, which I would expect her to. As long as they don't water down her role as they did in the film then I'm happy; I want to see her leading the Baudelaires as she so often does, saving them all, being intelligent and brave and strong and confident and gutsy and hands-on. I don't want Klaus to get all the good action again, because Violet's such an amazing character and I hated how the film really reduced her role in favour of Klaus's.
I disagree that she's 'too pretty' to be a hands-on inventor. Violet is described multiple times as being very pretty, and it never hurt her inventing skills. It's one of the countless things I love about her: that she has very good looks, but cares far more about her mind than her appearance. I also think it's a good message to send, that yes girls can be both pretty and intelligent -- you don't have to fit a stereotype (girls who are pretty are not automatically vain and idiotic, and girls who are intelligent are not automatically ugly). And in terms of her clothes factoring into this -- well, again her clothes were not her choice at this point.

Yes to what Mortinson said about the clothes. When I saw them outside Olaf's house I immediatly thought of the ugly clothes Mr. Poe bought them. Even so, I think they wardrobe is not going to be as gloomy as in the books and will include indeed bright colors to contrast with the settings and the rest of the characters. Violet in particular seems to wear a lot of pink, at least in TBB and TRR, if we consider this, this and this. I don't really care much about this, I think the aesthetic decisions so far are great and even when I liked the gothic style of the movie, I always thought it was too artificial. I totally prefer this, and Violet wearing pink is a great and strong contrast with her personality. That's what the books are about after all: it seems to be a fairy tale, but it's just the opposite.
