Hello, Sarah, and welcome to 667! There are people here who do enjoy the movie, but it is true that most of us aren't huge fans. I think my problems with it are that Violet is turned into a less important character, due to time constraints it has to skip a lot of important scenes from the books, Jim Carrey's Olaf is too jokey and not scary enough, and the addition of the spyglasses theme which doesn't come from the books and serves no purpose. This isn't to say I dislike the movie, though, just that I think the books are much better, and that the Netflix series has a lot of opportunities to improve upon the movie. I don't know if you know this but on 667 we're having a collective re-read of the first four books (which the first season of the Netflix adaptation will cover) - we're just about to finish the re-read of The Bad Beginning, but perhaps you could catch up and join us for some of the discussions, if two weeks per book is long enough for you to read them.

Hiya, Sarah!
So this is your first time reading the series? You've got a lot to look forward to, the latter half of the series gets pretty crazy, I'm sure you'll enjoy it!
As for the movie, well, I liked it a lot, albeit for different reasons than I like the books. I love the art design and the soundtrack, but there are some things that really damage the movie. The kids aren't given much personality, and the spyglass thing was a pretty poor attempt to shoehorn in the VFD plot from the later books, without actually exploring VFD to any depth. That said, I rather liked Jim Carey's Olaf- I have a lot of faith in Neil Patrick Harris, but it's odd not hearing Carrey's booming voice. And the movie's actually become something of a cult classic, I know quite a few people who love the movie without knowing anything about the books, and that says a lot.

Hi Sarah, and welcome! It's always nice to see lurkers make the transition to full members.
You haven't read the books yet! You have so much good in store! You may want to get through at least the first four books before the show comes out - the movie does change a good deal of their content and tone, and having read the books might give you a chance to better appreciate the subtleties of the show. Although I guess those things will be just as fun to realise retroactively as you read the books afterwards, the way many references in ASOUE has suddenly and brilliantly made sense to me years after first reading the books, as I came across whatever it was Snicket was referencing.
Either way, I agree with Zortegus that you should consider joining our re-read of the first four books. The observations of a fresh pair of eyes might inspire the rest of us to a new perspective, too. However, you should be warned that the thread, and the whole 'Sardonic Series' subforum in general, is fraught with spoilers of books which you haven't read yet, so if you don't want to know anything in advance, you should probably keep away from there until you've read the whole series. In the meantime, you can always post in the 'Objectionable Others' section, where we discuss things that aren't directly related to Lemony Snicket.
Oh, and as for the movie - it's enjoyable enough as a film in its own right, and visually, of course, it has a wonderful style. But narratively, it doesn't reach the books to their eye-adorned ankles (and I hope you'll have the same positive experience reading them).

Welcome, Sarah!!! I cannot wait to see what you come here to discuss as you read the books!!! I might avoid the Bad Beginning reread on here though, being one of the people who brought up quite a big spoiler. Maybe if you join The Reptile Room reread thread, we can all stick to talking about the first two books, or at least use spoiler tagss; it would be a shame to exclude someone who make such a nice first impression because we can't be tactful.

Welcome.
I am in the crowd who liked the movie, and I also really like some of the early ideas in scripts for the movie. There is a lot to like about the movie, even if it isn't the book and Klaus was made the main character instead of all three Baudelaires, a phrase which here means "Legolas effect".
What's funny is that I read the books in 2013, and I actually saw the movie in theaters in 2004. And...I actually came up with a fanfic involving my OCs in the V.F.D. world and there's some stuff recycled from the movie, including the spyglasses, the Ocular Device, the train scene, and some hints of the early movie scripts.
