They usually teach British English in schools, yet American English is more widely written in the internet, which is why I took up the bad habit of inconsistently switching between the British and American spellings of particular words. I have more-or-less settled for the British spellings, yet I sometimes forget about it, so it could very much happen that I'd write "doughnut" today and "donut" tomorrow, without even noticing. However, I recall "doughnut"/"donut" being a bit different from words like "flavour"/"flavor" or "cosy"/"cozy," because "doughnut" is also correct in American English, additionally to "donut"... Right?
