I’m glad that the Volunteers Fighting Disease song finally has a tune (that I didn’t make up myself) so that it can now get stuck in my head for hours on end!

- who told these kids good acting was "saying lines as fast as possible". the kids are great anyway, but still. TRUE, and applies to the adults too at times. It's fine as an option, but when it's the only method of delivery, it can grate.

Episode seven thoughts: GAAAAAH the opening credits. Even just catching sight of those stilettos is horrifying. And the thought of operations, let alone operating theatres, makes me squirmy. The visual of Lemony being incognito and on the run is a nice touch, I like it better than the Jude Law in-the-shadows lens the 2004 film went for. The Last Chance General Store being out of gas, out of order and out of luck just sums up the Baudelaire luck quite nicely. I'm not a fan of the crooked building effect. "We're child actors" hahahahaha The telegraph being sent to Jacquelyn was a nice thought. Olaf pursuing the children through the store takes the mystique away from the "how did he follow us here?" element from the books. Esme boasting about being a Snow Scout and crowned False Spring Queen is an obvious foreshadow/reference to TSS. Once she meets Carmelita.................. The Volunteers Fighting Disease was well executed - down to the book lyrics, sing-along "bouncy ball" presentation and what I call "inducing diabetes" type cheerfulness. Physically seeing Babs, as opposed to hearing her on the speaker system, was necessary for such a visual based adaptation. Interesting but thoughtful move to disguise the whole troupe as doctors to initially infiltrate - you can get away with more as faux doctors at a hospital. Hal's respect for information and "with great power" speech was nice...but...made me feel impatient. Olaf thwarted by beaurocracy - nope. Just wait until dark and break in! Obvious The Shining reference in the hallway, clearly going for more of a horror theme throughout this episode, outright prowling the hospital for the children. WHY is Hal visiting them in the unfinished wing? That feels outright inplausible. Just finding a way to accelerate the plot, really (steal the keys and fabricate material to make the children feel guilty about betraying Hal). The film file was a nice way to visually include Jacques Snicket posthumourously. I miss him.OH DEAR ESME is terrifying. Bravo Lucy Punch. Violet's capture is a great cliffhanger. I do agree with some of the others' observations about Violet's portrayal - she's certainly gutsy and it shone in that chase. OK, these episodes were absolutely everything I dreamed they'd be. I'm so happy that they managed to make it genuinely scary/creepy, especially in the scene in the Library of Records with Esmé and her incredibly horrible Cruella de Vil-esque costume. The set design was amazing (though I always pictured the finished half as much cleaner, but the dirty design was just as good). I was so sorry for Violet and I love how brave she is in the Library of Records (I always think it's one of her bravest moments from the books). Also I was glad that they essentially kept the bungee rope invention the same, just without having to spend ages tying rubber bands together, which makes sense for television. The unfinished wing was so cool ... Oh, and Hal's emphasis on how much he trusts the Baudelaires was --argh!! I could just feel their guilt. The Volunteers Fighting Disease were perfect. OH and they included Systematically Assisting Sisyphus's stealthy, cyst-susceptible sister.' line which I LOVE. Klaus & Sunny as Dr. Faustus were hilarious. When I've re-watched the episodes I'll have more to add, but those are my main thoughts for the moment. I agree with everything here. I'm just sad we lost the line "Babs has resigned from Heimlich Hospital. She decided to pursue a career as a stuntwoman, and has begun throwing herself off buildings immediately." ...I liked that line. oooooh boy I was not happy they left that out.

- who told these kids good acting was "saying lines as fast as possible". the kids are great anyway, but still Sonnenfeld himself has literally said that this is his directing style to a tee. He loves screwball comedies and a huge portion of his directing style from a performance standpoint is to push for actors to say their lines faster like in those types of films. So there’s your answer. The biggest name director of the show told them that.

Episode eight thoughts: Ohhhhhh dear the "survivor of the fire" red herring. Poor Hal, and his reaction finding the Library of Records mess. His once orderly world now in chaos. ...goes for Babs too apparently, now that her clipboard has been confiscated. Goodness Olaf is creepy in his victory speech to Violet. The break room for doctors is a reminder of my often ignored suggestion for a nap room at my place of work. "Is there a way of out this hospital that doesn't involve paperwork?" "You can die..." That lullaby theme when Violet was knocked out was super creepy. Klaus' disguise is hilarious. "You're both wearing medical coats." ...sigh. *squeak* the sugar bowl in the break roomHal updated his glasses prescription, a subtle change. Hal once was blind, but now [he can] see, geddit? HAH I finally understand Esme's seemingly ridiculous random and ever changing names whenever she's in disguise! It was confusing me so much until now. I am a dork and watch with subtitles even with English as my first language and happened to notice Cassandra Ursula Terrific Elliandra Anyone about to rewatch TVV, guys? Can we verify this is deliberate on Esme's part? "The most important thing we do at this hospital - paperwork!" Olaf: *destroys the Snicket file so there's no room to clarify which fire had a survivor* Hahahahaha the useless adults standing around arguing while the Baudelaires escape. Usually it's Olaf escaping under cover of such arguing. "Accidentally Swallowed Something You Shouldn't Have" Ward. Bungee escapeeeeeeeee. Poor Babs taking as much paperwork as possible. Super secret sugar bowl smuggle...I didn't expect to like this set of episodes so much. Wow.

The acronym name! Good spotting, I don't think anyone's noticed that yet. As it happens, I am watching TVV Part one tonight with my roommate who loves the series but didn't binge watch them all in 24 hours like I did, so I will be on the lookout for more acronyms.

Also, you've reminded me - I didn't understand the bit where Olaf knocks over the projector and then sets the Snicket film on fire. Is this an accident? Is it to destroy the evidence? Why not at least listen to the rest of the tape first?

The biggest name director of the show told them that. im sure that it can work well! but when you’re dealing with child actors who struggle with delivering tone sometimes (and i mean that with no disrespect, the kids do a fantastic job otherwise) one might want to modify a signature. not everything is going to work in every setting, or appeal to everyone... big name director or not. but thats just my opinion, so take it with a grain of salt.

Plus the reel running through that projector was likely nitrate film, the oldest material used in filming. It was known to be highly flammable.

Pretty sure it's an accident. A rare case of Olaf's bumbling colliding with his villainy in a plot-relevant manner. Right. I watched the scene twice at the time, because I was confused, and both times I concluded that Olaf knocked the projector over on purpose. So if it was supposed to be an accident, it wasn't at all convincing. Or was that bit on purpose and the fire accidental?

He pushed it over in anger and surprise over 'the surviving Baudelaire' news and then it unexpectedly set alight and then he decided this was a good thing and blew the fire to give it more life.
