Pretty sure it's an accident. A rare case of Olaf's bumbling colliding with his villainy in a plot-relevant manner. Right. I watched the scene twice at the time, because I was confused, and both times I concluded that Olaf knocked the projector over on purpose. So if it was supposed to be an accident, it wasn't at all convincing. Or was that bit on purpose and the fire accidental? I interpreted it as the last thing - in his rage, he knocked over the projector, which sparked a tiny fire. Olaf felt frustrated and probably a little betrayed by the world with the survivor news, so instead of letting it hurt him, I think he wanted to hurt others - thus the fire. Plus we know Olaf's a pyromaniac, so he was transfixed by the flame. I personally liked this change from the books - the Snicket file moment adds a lot more to Olaf's character than him planning the fire.

So if it was supposed to be an accident, it wasn't at all convincing. Or was that bit on purpose and the fire accidental? Precisely. Olaf knocked the projector "on purpose" — in the sense that he was getting annoyed at the idea Beatrice might have survived the fire and knocked it over in his rage. It wasn't a reasoned action, however, and he didn't at all mean for it to catch fire, which is a consequence of its being a nitrate film (which as gamegenie mentions are highly flammable). I won't deny it's all a little contrived, of course. But I think that's the idea.

The acronym spot is great -- especially because it's made me realise for the first time that the initials of Esmé's real name spell EGGS.

The chase scene in the library of records is without doubt, the best scene in the whole series to date. The music was intense and perfectly scored. Lucy Punch (Esme) was perfection. Perfect balance of humorous and terrifying, really top notch performance. I quite laughed at her getting mad at the shoes. It really showed how she will wear anything if it's "IN". Also, she did drink three cups of coffee. Haha. It's nice to see a villain really compete with Count Olaf in terms of evil. She wasn't playing around, she meant business.

The acronym name! Good spotting, I don't think anyone's noticed that yet. As it happens, I am watching TVV Part one tonight with my roommate who loves the series but didn't binge watch them all in 24 hours like I did, so I will be on the lookout for more acronyms. I just finished TVV Part 1. She does the four name thing twice; the first time it spells out SPAM, but the second one is the nonsensical DVCM, so maybe it's just a coincidence?

Actually, DVCM is an acronym for "Dynamic Value Chain Management", which is a term in management methodology. Ergo, something not wholly unrelated to the Sixth Most Important Financial Advisor In Town. I don't know. Three sure words (CUTE, SPAM, EGGS) and a maybe sound like too much for it to be all a coincidence.

I'm just trying to figure out what DVCM could stand for. The others seem so intentional ...

I'm surprised that my least favourite of the books turned out to be the scariest of the show. My heart is pounding and I finished over half an hour ago. It's taking a while to calm down, to be honest. But I'm absolutely over the moon that the Person of Indeterminate Gender didn't die!! I could cry. Me too, I love Henchperson. This was my favourite pair of episodes from the series. Going all out horror movie really livened up one what was one of my least favourite books. So many good creepy scenes. Olaf smashing the lightbulbs. Esme stalking Violet in the Hall of Records. Olaf's gross hunter speech to Violet. The scene where the whole troupe stands over Violet while they knock her out with the anaesthesia (so glad that one wasn't Count Olaf by himself with Violet, ick). Lastly that scene with Klaus in the operating theatre is also pretty nightmarish, since he's surrounded by enemies and a crowd calling for him to kill his sister.

It would be grand to have an answer, but I have to say that I'm not convinced by "Dynamic Value Chain Management," which appears to be a very obscure term with an unusually small number of Google hits, at least some of which aren't using it as a formal term at all. It's no CUTE, SPAM, or even EGGS. Could we be placing undue emphasis on this?

EDIT: Oops, just saw @antenora 's post lol

If you won't accept DVCM, what if that's what SPAM was about it? Warning us that the next Esmé acronym *will* be utterly meaningless spam.
