Why does every TV show insist on this. Two people have a dramatic conversation, and one of them gets up to leave. They are just at the door when the other person says to them. 'Hey Tony' (Tony is just an example name). Tony then turns around and the other person says 'Thanks'. Tony then smiles and leaves. I see this in literally every tv show and i shout. WHEN DO PEOPLE EVER DO THIS? ?

I know you specified that the name Tony was just an example, but I chose to read this as meaning that in every tv show, someone will dramatically say 'Hey, Tony' to someone else, whether or not their name is actually Tony. For the record, if this were to happen, I would totally support it.

But putting that aside -- I'm not sure I see it in every show, but I know exactly what you're talking about and I agree that it is totally unrealistic.

For the record, if this were to happen, I would totally support it. Oh hi Tony. I can't think of any specific examples, but I recognise this happening, too, and I agree that it's a little unrealistic. I might conceivably be a little worked up about something and only decide to thank the person who was comforting me as they walked out the door, but that would definitely come out with a lot more hesitation. If a real person did that with the calm and deliberateness of a TV character, I think it'd seem very insincere. I take it with a grain of salt, though, because sometimes fictional characters aren't written to act realistically - but then again, I'll give you that this particular thing rarely comes across as a deliberate departure from realism.

I think the most unrealistic aspect of it is the lack of any further conversation -- typically, 'Tony' just leaves. I agree with Comet, though, that fictional characters aren't always supposed to be realistic -- the problem is when they ARE supposed to be realistic, and fail at being so.
