Oh wow, there's a lot of weird going on here. Bright and cheery blue and yellow color scheme. The perspective on the dock seems really wonky and broken, really the framing is all around bad on the bottom half. A human eyeball replacing the sun... I just don't understand anymore.
It's amazing that such a visually beautiful movie can't catch a break on DVD covers. They always end up either being a poor representation of the movie or just being bad, this one gets a medal for being both. Oh well, they'll get it right eventually...
It would be nice if they'd give us a 4K release of this (an extended cut would be nice too, but there's no chance of that).

This new cover seems to have re-used many of the same art assets as the one from 5 years ago, at least as far the adult cast is concerned.
I find it quite interesting how prominent Lemony Snicket's is on the old cover versus Unfortunate Events on the new. It's rather like the way the Netflix show's title is designed.

I just did a bit of research and it looks like the bit with the human eye in the center of Damocles Dock was used on some of the film's foreign posters. I have to say it looks a lot better on the old poster than the new DVD cover art which is clearly trying to crib from it. :Edit: Found this very similar (but much better) poster while searching for those two. I wish they'd used this for the DVD cover instead.

This is the only cover in the thread so far which is really selling me on the unfortunate angle. The rest of the covers and posters all make it look like the Baudelaires are off on a quirky and cheerful adventure in which the "unfortunate" aspect is very much ironic.

That version on the French and one of the German posters has the crumbling remains of Aunt Josephine's house seemingly soaring through the sky like some kind of magic carpet. Now that the Netflix version is out to give people a more accurate impression of the franchise, it's quite amusing how inaccurately these posters represent the story.

The brown-tinted poster does look more 'unfortunate' but I don't think it communicates the tone of the movie as accurately as the brighter posters. It looks serious and dark, slightly post-apocalyptic. The movie is a quirky adventure and the misfortune is approached in a humorous, whimsical, witty way- the brighter posters are a more accurate depiction of the fantastical, melodramatic tone of misfortune.

Now, how's this for an accurate poster? Baudel-who?

Hey, I can find quite a few French ones which are pretty alright. This one is, perhaps, underwhelming, but at least we don't have Jim Carrey mugging the camera: This variation nearly feels like something that you could find as a cover for a collected-edition of the books, and it still keeps Olaf while avoiding Carrey, which I believe is worthy of praise: And this one feels like a better (less lush and cheerful) version of the second image shown in the original post:

My favorite out of all the movie's posters was probably this one. It's simple, effective, and gives you some idea of the movie's look and tone.

I bought this movie poster at my local thrift store back in 2005. My theory is that our town theater used it to advertise the movie and then later gave it to the thrift store. Does anyone else have info on this poster? I don't recall seeing it ever used for the DVD or any marketing for the movie. Google searches bring up all the posters you've shared, but this one rarely shows up. I guess the poster caught my eye because the ominous red sky contrasts with the typically blue sky posters you see everywhere.

Now, how's this for an accurate poster? Baudel-who? I can't stop laughing at this one. I really like the red, silhouette style poster, simple and gothic in style.
