Hermes, this doesn't count as a song and I am still looking forward to your post.

Here we come a-wassailing Among the leaves so green, Here we come a-wandering So fair to be seen. Love and joy come to you, And to you your wassail, too, And God bless you, and send you A Happy New Year, And God send you a Happy New Year.
Our wassail cup is made Of the rosemary tree, And so be your beer Of the best barley. Love and joy come to you, And to you your wassail, too, And God bless you, and send you A Happy New Year, And God send you a Happy New Year.
We are not daily beggers That beg from door to door, But we are neighbors' children Whom you have seen before Love and joy come to you, And to you your wassail, too, And God bless you, and send you A Happy New Year, And God send you a Happy New Year.
Good master and good mistress, As you sit beside the fire, Pray think of us poor children Who wander in the mire. Love and joy come to you, And to you your wassail, too, And God bless you, and send you A Happy New Year, And God send you a Happy New Year
We have a little purse Made of ratching leather skin; We want some of your small change To line it well within. Love and joy come to you, And to you your wassail, too, And God bless you, and send you A Happy New Year, And God send you a Happy New Year.
Bring us out a table And spread it with a cloth; Bring us out a mouldy cheese, And some of your Christmas loaf. Love and joy come to you, And to you your wassail, too, And God bless you, and send you A Happy New Year, And God send you a Happy New Year.
God bless the master of this house, Likewise the mistress too; And all the little children That round the table go. Love and joy come to you, And to you your wassail, too, And God bless you, and send you A Happy New Year, And God send you a Happy New Year.

Hermes, this doesn't count as a song and I am still looking forward to your post. Does it have to be a song? The song at the end (Sussex Carol) is my favourite Christmas Carol

I haven't seen this film before, but the book is very well known. Oh yes! That must be it. I think people would recognize her stories (though not her name) where I grew up (in the country), though not so much where I live now (in the suburbs / city). Does it have to be a song? Mostly I just wanted to hear Hermes's song, but I've thoroughly enjoyed today's double update. As it turns out, I have heard "Here We Come a-Wassailing" many times before, but did not recognize the lyrics by themselves at all. The last time I heard it I thought the verses were a blend of English and cheery nonsense syllables. (I won't post my full, wildly-off-the-mark gloss, but here's a sample: "Here we come a wasp sailing / a monger: Lisa Reen.") The chorus I understood. The real version is much better!
