This is an interesting and suprising take, but I'm afraid I don't see myself being convinced: he liked to try and hit birds with his slingshot and there's no excuse for that -- he was a bully through and through. The failings of other characters don't excuse his own behaviour.

(I also disagree that LS doesn't/didn't care about anyone, but that's another matter.)
