I grew up in a strict no shoes household. Shoes were only allowed in the entrance bit of the house. I would like to keep this rule, but sometimes I walk around with shoes if I'm about to go somewhere and have already put them on and the floor needs cleaning soon anyway. I think the problem is that our flat doesn't have a clearly defined entrance area, you come in from outside and you're basically standing in the living room. Entrance areas don't seem to be much of a thing in the UK except in houses which I will never be able to afford, in most houses I have seen you wouldn't be able to fit a normal sized shoe shelf between the front door and either the stairs or the next door leading to a room.
My feet are always cold, so I always wear slippers. I have summer slippers (actually no, those broke, I need to get new ones for the summer!), only for the really really warm days, which cover the feet but not the ankles, and rest of the year slippers, which are big fluffy things covering feet and ankles.
