This is an interesting question. When I was a small child, I learned to count with my fingers from my index finger. However, around the age of 12, I became interested in Brazilian Sign Language. The number "1" is done with the thumb, not the index finger. Since then, I started counting using my thumb first. However, starting with number 3, I usually convert the fingers to the position where the index, middle and ring fingers are stretched out, as this is how the number three is done in Brazilian Sign Language. I keep thinking about how this is such an insignificant subject that I've recently caught myself thinking about, and how by great coincidence you guys talked about it here...

my mum does thumb index middle pinky ring. It makes sense because the pinky doesn't really stay down on its own, but it's still weird.

my hypothesis when I created the thread was that counting the thumb first is a non-American habit. mainly because I only seen it in foreign flicks. The results are inconclusive.
