i feel the same as Terence, though i think tattoos are generally less tacky when they have less significance. i can understand it as an extreme form of bodily ornament, like a jewelry or a clothing. in which case it seems best to make a purely aesthetic choice in what you get, for example if there is a tattoo artist whose style you really like, or just certain patterns or motifs you like. obviously this still requires some taste, as some of the tackiest tats are in this category, like "an eagle with a sword" or "a dragon with breasts." but if it's just a quote or a replication of some sort, and the value lies entirely in what it's referencing, that's the peak of tacky, to me. the fashion equivalent would be wearing "merch." not that there's anything wrong with wearing merch, lol. but even if someone was wearing a shirt with my favorite band's name on it, and we got talking and became great friends because i saw the shirt, i would still think that person dressed tacky. Interesting opinion, isn't the ideal something that both looks aesthetically great and has personal significance? Even if it is a quote or reference or whatever? Like a reference can be a reference, & have personal significance, & just straight up look good all at once

Like a reference can be a reference, & have personal significance, & just straight up look good all at once no. in fact, i really think aesthetic quality should be the only consideration when decorating yourself. i have this hangup to the extent that i may think something looks good at first, but will dislike it if i find out it has some personal significance. even, like, a ring you inherited. lol.

Lol dang, kinda curious why but it's just cause I don't relate. like as long as the meaning isn't hateful or whatever, i personally like the new dimension it adds to the person. or it's boring at worst.

it’s just like, fashion should be an abstract art. I judge appearances through my ideals of fashion. obviously some people don’t base their appearances on anything related to fashion. but I still see em through that lens.

i had a really long post on this thread that's not here anymore ! grrrrrrr.
my friend is american/queenslander so he got the tattoo BEFORE realising it looks just like a footy logo... ohhh rugby also no shade but where is that one located?? lol the picture is tooo artsy for me i cant tell! on his thigh like slightly above a normal hemline, so whenever anyone asks to see it he jokingly pulls up his short seductively

it’s just like, fashion should be an abstract art. I judge appearances through my ideals of fashion. I think everything including one's ideals of fashion are derivative to some degree, like it's informed by something, and i can't help but think that counts as meaning and significance. I get viewing it abstractly though, rather than purely aesthetically. I feel like the word "abstract" considers the influence/significance of feeling? but now i'm like what's the relationship of aesthetics to abstract art? idk i'm spiraling now i guess that part yeah

So I have decided I want to actually try and get a tattoo of my cat's paw print. I'm about to order a paw print set so I can try and sort that part out when we're at my parents' house for Christmas, and then I guess I just have to find a tattoo place that can put it on me. It's probably going somewhere on my arm, but I don't know where exactly.
