I hope I am posting this in the correct place. I am currently reading THH again, and found the below paragraph very amusing. Violet is often illustrated as much taller than her other siblings, however this snippet seems to suggest that Klaus, at 13, may be tall for his age as well (to be taller than a fully grown man). So how tall is Violet exactly, if she towers over Klaus, who might be of above average height himself? The average height of an American male is 5 ft, 10 in. If the shopkeeper is of a shorter stature (and assuming he is American), we might place him at 5 ft 4 in., maybe? The average height for a 13 year old boy ranges from 4 ft 11 in. - 5 ft, 5 in.; if we take Klaus to be the latter, and Violet is often illustrated as being two or three heads taller than Klaus, well... Violet must be very tall. And, as she's still going through puberty, I don't think it would be outlandish to say that she might grow even taller. I'm not sure there's a discussion to be had here, really. The idea of Violet being incredulously tall is just something I find funny. F. Trot (P.S., there's nothing to indicate the shopkeeper has dwarfism, though I suppose that's a possibility too; he is only described as 'short' - which is sort of vague.)

Very interesting, this is a subject that I've never thought of. Given how the series often has people that it would describe as "freaks" I certainly think it's fair to say the man may have been a midget. I don't think Violet is particularly tall, given how her height is contrasted to other characters, such as Count Olaf. Yes! You're right, of course - Violet isn't mentioned to be taller than many (if any?) other adults; this person does appear to be an outlier, in that sense. The paragraph highlights their height differences in some detail, which is interesting. Perhaps a dwarf shopkeeper could even be interpreted as foreshadowing (intentional or not) for the carnival theme in the next book, in the sense that animals and people with dwarfism were often exhibited during the freak show era. Admittedly, that's a stretch.

Sir is also described as unusually short. I'd be curious to know what some other instances of foreshadowing are.

Osn't there an illustration where Olaf seems to be about twice as tall as Violet, who seems to be twice as tall as Klaus?
