And assume it isn't going to be your native one. Like you just wake up one day speaking one language, any one, but not your first.
For me Italian. Spanish would be more practical, but I just love the Italian language so much, I really hope I can be fluent one day for reals

I'd pick Latin, that way I if I move to a small village in the mountains, people would refer to me as "The Speaker of the Dead Language". I love this, it's so on brand

How come? Is it just because you'd be able to communicate with as many people as possible or any other reason?

How come? Is it just because you'd be able to communicate with as many people as possible or any other reason? I wouldn’t pick an indo-European language because I feel confident that I could learn them anyway. Out of the non-IE cultures, any of whose languages would be quite a relief to acquire instantly, I am interested most in China.

i could just say english which would be useful since it's used everywhere... chinese makes practical sense but i don't want that to be the only language i know. russian would be cool to know, esp to read russian literature without translation putting other considerations aside though, i think maybe greek, because i'm greek from my father's side/have family in greece & would love to visit and learn more about the culture How come? I think I’d like to learn toki pona! i’ve been watching a few videos on it and it seems super cool esperanto is another one i like (and for similar reasons) but i barely hear of anyone using it so i’d probably go with toki pona

i think in this hypothetical you wouldn't be able to speak or learn any other languages In that case I think this is a pretty nightmarish scenario no matter what language you choose.

I should probably be sensible and pick English, but I'm not sensible so I'm struggling to decide between Italian, Swedish and Finnish.
