I wrote an essay 7 years ago, and I've probably rambled on about 'the state of things' far too many times since, but when the season is in for reflection, the mood will often take me away, and so here we are.
20 years is far too large a number to even refer to as a modest achievement. I highly doubt anyone, 20 years ago, would have imagined anyone would still be here. Probably even 10 years ago. Most of the people who are here now weren't here then, and there isn't really anybody who has been here since the beginning.
667, and the people on it, has evolved so much especially in the last few years. There have been some quieter periods and some buisier periods, and people have come and gone a lot over the years, but at its centre the forum has remained the same blend of different people. But as a whole, I think everyone is wiser and better at, well, the internet, than we used to be. People have grown, and we know to let others do the same, an opportuntiy that perhaps was not as afforded by some in 667s past.
I think this change and synthesis has shown that 667 has the potential to continue for many more years. Although A Series of Unfortunate Events is essentially finished, and butts in the series will inevitably diminish, there will always be new people. I can attest that the books are still amongst some of the most popular with children, and therefore people will always come to 667.
The divided between the 'Snicket' and 'Non-Snicket' has definitley diminished a lot in recent years. Although I don't partake in a lot of the theorising and analysis as others, I definitley am here for the creative endeavours, and even more so for the Miscellanious Games and silliness. And I'm sure 667 will continue to appeal to those who don't even want to talk about the books, but Lee Harvey Oswald instead. All are welcome.
But the links to the past will always be there, with the History of 667 all accessible here. Its been fascinating, now that i've been here for so long, when I stumble across something I said 9 or 10 years ago, and my former thoughts stare back at me like ghosts. It's just odd, but nice. A nice kind of odd.
It's a similar feeling I get when I read posts from members who are no longer with us. Lindas presence is very much missed at events like this - she would definitley have organised some much better theme ideas than I have. And somebody would probably have made a joke about the forum being almost as old as Hermes, only for him to interject and say 'I am actually quite a bit older than that, though not as old as everyone makes me out to be'. It's just such a shame, really. I hope that wherever they are they're joining in the fun.
Other Members who have become more absent will occasionally drop in now and then, like Bryan, Pen, and Sophie have more recently. It would be nice for people like Willis, Rellim, Pandora, Peppermince, BSam, Emma, Tiago, Sherry Ann, Dante, everyone who has ever posted here, to come back eventually. And some of them probably will, some of them probably wont. They are and will be missed, whatever happens.
But as for the people that are here, well, there are some great people around at the moment. Roxy, GlitteryMisery, Twiggy, Urban-Letter-Opene. Terry Craig, VioletBunUnfortuante, and Jean Lucio are the main people who come to mind at the moment, circulating round my thoughts of being favourites. I mean it when I say it, you are all my favourites. Oh yeah, and Bear as well. As you said a few months ago, there was a time where you were the only person really posting here, and that does deserve a mention.
I guess my favourite favourite 667ers are conincidentally my fellow moderators - Bee, Zortegus and Semblance. Bee and I definitley have had our differences in the past, but I think we get on really well now. Zortegus is just the best looking person on here. And Semblance is just one of those people you feel was always there, lurking in the shadows, biding his time, and probably sleeping on the floor.
Oh, and of course theres Kit's tits kick ticks. My lovely wife. Which is still a very fun and novel thing to say, as it happens. And definitley one of the maddest things to come out of this place.
Who knows what the future holds. 10 years ago, not a single one of us 5 were moderators here, and in 10 years perhaps we'll all have been replaced by newer, younger models. Or maybe some old members will come back, and take over in a blaze of glory. (Hopefully Cafe SalMONAlla, who I miss a LOT). Sometimes these things go round in circles.
Speaking of circles, I'm glad that 'Noble Enough' is once again the forums tagline. It comes from my favourite passage in the books, and at most its a statement of intent.
So yeah.
Go.... be noble. Or something.
