I think it’s very easy to not lie. there is, in fact, a big difference between being honest, and just blurting out everything that pops into your head, like in the Jim Carrey movie.

i don't think lying to a child ever protects them, it just makes it worse later when they realize they've been lied to.

Why is this? It's because when someone asks for your opinion, they are actually just asking to validate their own, at least in most cases. For example, when most people ask how your day was, they just want to hear that you're happy, not that your father just died. Where's the fun in that? I don't particularly like society at large (no offense, society -- it's not you, it's me) and don't have much interest in keeping to their sensibilities. Nonstandard answers that throw people off of their predefined scripts are the best, but in general I don't subscribe to the idea that I need to act any specific way. I'm going to tell the truth all day out of spite.

I understand that, but what about when a child's animal dies, and parents tell them that they just moved to a farm and are very happy. Those are most certainly lies, but it's protecting children from heart break. When my pets died, my parents always told me that they were in Heaven. I don't consider that a lie, but I know some people would.

I don’t consider it a lie either, more of a religious/spiritual belief.
