Hello everyone!
I am rebranding 667 as an online think tank focused on exploring the world through literature. The website will remain largely unchanged, but every year we will host a Grand Symposium of Curiosity, where we will bring ideas from the world of Lemony Snicket to life.
Every year 667ers will suggest new avenues of research to explore ASOUE, ATWQ, and beyond. The best suggestion (as agreed amongst all who participate) will then become our Grand Question and the main focus of that year's symposium.
Our symposiums will be funded by sales from the website’s new shop, which will be stocked with items made for and by 667ers. These could range from drawings to recipe cards to accessories, films, music, and more. There will be frequent competitions held to design new products for the shop, so the inventory will always be kept fresh. Many ideas for good products can be found here.
In my market research, the issue of funding was brought up: how will we sell enough to fund an entire convention every year? The solution is simple: we will sell everything at very high prices to very rich people. Easy. But if for some reason that fantastic plan doesn't work, I think we can also explore the option of submitting grant proposals to various institutions which fund innovative research. As a think tank with no agenda other than a desire to fulfil our own curiosity through our consumption of literature, I think we will be able to secure funding from arts councils in particular, as our entire organisation can be seen as an artistic endeavour.
Aside from the Grand Question, 667ers attending the symposium will also be able to present their own research into whatever topic has particularly fascinated them within the past year, whether inspired by Snicket or any other author of their choosing.
For more casual members, the site will largely remain the same: a place to socialise, discuss interests, play games, etc. But it will have fresh drive, fresh purpose, a fresh wealth of knowledge and discussion kept alive by the desire always to go that one step further beyond the page – and to forge ever stronger friendships with our fellow 667ers.
And now, to get an idea of what all this would involve, I would like to invite you all to submit proposals for any area of research you like, so long as it is inspired in some way by the world of Lemony Snicket.
As an example, my original project proposals were ‘How does one cook the perfect pasta puttanesca?’, and ‘Which fencing moves would work best against a regular opponent if you happen to be a baby with no weapon available other than your unusually large teeth?’ Your suggestions can be similarly light-hearted, or they can be more serious and philosophical in tone -- anything goes. If possible, I will try to incorporate any good ideas into my final presentation.
Questions and comments are welcome!
