Chapter 11 Good thing that flashlight still has battery left. Even after its destruction, the library provides some shelter. Fun fact:This is the last book where Sunny is referred to as a baby. Maybe whoever left the message for Jacques didn’t know he was dead, or they left it for some other JS.We know of 3:Jacques, Jerome, and Justice Strauss.Or maybe it was someone we haven’t met before. If Esme falls in that pit she’ll be pissed. I seriously believe the message was received by Lemony Snicket. From this book, Lemony demonstrates that he has the knowledge of a witness. In other words, years before he had been involved with events related to SB. For example, he knew specifically about the brave volunteer who threw the SB out the window, something that the Baudelaires could not know and very few people could know. It must have been Lemony or one of his supporters who found out about this. But of course, he experienced this many years before he published the books. I believe that Lemony simply took over Jacques Snicket's responsibilities. He must have taken it upon himself to act in harmony with the messages left for JS.

Chapter 10 I like the passage about C.M. Kornbluth, it's one of those "vanished past" moments that the Baudelaires will never get to see. The "young man showing an interest in deep sea radar" is another bit of foreshadowing for TGG's submarine setting. Regarding his pistachio nuts, notice that a few pages later Violet kicks at a burnt pistachio shell. So maybe he was at the headquarters right before its destruction. And we do learn later that there's at least one Kornbluth child in the Snow Scouts.
I also love the passage about giving Violet some privacy. I had never read a book where the author did such a thing, so to see Lemony explain why he was giving Violet the courtesy of some privacy was really cool (it still is). And both of them having small secret smiles as they resume their climb is cute.
Chapter 11 It's good the Baudelaires were able to decipher enough of the Verbal Fridge Dialogue, although I wonder what the pickle and lemon juice signify (maybe the lemon juice is a signal to Lemony?)
Chapter 12 The flame-imitating dress shows up in all its glory. It even has sound effects.
The destruction of the HQ really screwed up the food chain in the area.
Violet remembers her parents singing 'The world is quiet here' to her long ago. Perhaps they were singing The Little Snicket Lad.
Aha, so Lemony needs the pickle from that fridge to put in an encoded sandwich. Interesting.
The list of things the Bauds will never get to do at the HQ is sad, it feels like such a cozy place. I particularly like the detail about Sunny serving ice cream for the swimming coaches. I'd probably hang out in the library copying down secret VFD stuff.
We learn Ike's full name is Isaac, and he has a Dr. title.

Chapter 12 I wonder if the troupe is aware of what Sunny’s up to and that’s why the keep changing the subject. Sunny must’ve gotten cold keeping the lettuce in her shirt. Also putting the eggplant under the car was a very clever idea and possibly a Very Fun Diversion as well. Esme’s outfits get crazier and crazier, I can’t wait for the lettuce bikini. Gotta love how this is the 3rd book where the Bauds do something a monster might do yet they’re only realizing that now. Interesting how the Vernacularly Fastened Door code involved Anna Karenina which was the same book that Esme bragged about throwing in the fireplace. Chapter 13 How exactly do you tell a bird’s age? I love that definition of tiara. The Snow Scouts could’ve been saved if Bruce wasn’t so stupid. One of the Snow Scouts is apparently a Kornbluth. So Olaf only washes his face for special occasions?Wonder why he didn’t do so for his attempted wedding. Esme’s alphabet pledge isn’t much better than the Snow Scouts one, it still contains xylophone.

Chapter 13
So not only is there a Kornbluth in the Snow Scouts, but also a Winnipeg. Maybe R has a child, or a niece/nephew?
There's a Spats fortune, so are Carmelita's parents connected to VFD?
It's interesting that the powder-faced women had a sibling, continuing the VFD trend of families with three siblings. Maybe Olaf burned down their house when he recruited them. In the next book we get to see Fernald's fascinating backstory, but I'd love to know more about the backstory of these two women.
It's funny that Fernald calls him Uncle Bruce, and seems to be warming up to the pledge.
When entering a library, I do sometimes say "The world is quiet here" to myself. Quietly, of course.
Esme calls him "Hooky" for the first time, a moniker which continues into TGG.
It's crazy that the school bully from way back in Book 5 is now in league with our main villains.
We finally get payoff with the bread knife, which Violet has been jostling in her pocket throughout the book.
The fridge possibly performing in one of the gloomy music halls of the city is quite an image lol

There's a Spats fortune, so are Carmelita's parents connected to VFD? Not necessarily. It just means they're rich.

If personally doubt that Carmelita's parents are part of VFD, but if they are they must be in its bad side of she's any indication.

If personally doubt that Carmelita's parents are part of VFD, but if they are they must be in its bad side of she's any indication. From the content of Nero's letter to Carmelita's parents, they were aware of the existence of VFD. But they had a very negative view of the secret organization. I prefer to believe that they were negatively influenced by Geraldine's articles rather than actually being part of the organization.

And I must say the 9th book was good even though it wasn’t my favorite, I’m glad to have finally reached the bigger teens books and The Carnivorous Carnival REALLY ENDED ON A CLIFFHANGER with Sunny getting captured.
Can’t say I surprised at all about Olivia (or Madame Lulu) breaking her promise to the Baudelaires about revealing where they are to Olaf, but I expecting her to live and be a recurring character at the end of series and not expecting her to die.

I also expected Madame Lulu to become a recurring character, the Netflix show made her a better character for sure

Madame Lulu kind of had wasted potential, it felt like she popped in then out.
