i was doing some persnickety reading at the very sensible hour of half past one in the morning, when i happened to stumble across the announcement for the upcoming percy jackson and the olympians televison televised series.
as you may know, the one and only joe tracz, our very own baudelaire extraordinaire, who wrote the musical for the lightning thief, is one of the main writers for the new show.
whilst he was announced as part of the writers room in 2021, we have now received confirmation of the two episodes he penned !
Episode 4 – "I Plunge to My Death" – Teleplay by: Jonathan E. Steinberg & Joe Tracz
Episode 6 – "We Take a Zebra to Vegas" – Teleplay by: Jonathan E. Steinberg & Joe Tracz
the first episode will be released on the 20 déc. 2023, until then, i doubt we require an oracle of delphi to foresee the upcoming success. this also evokes the necessary discussion of faithful adaptations, alike that of the ASOUE 2004 film, of cinematic counterparts cut short before their denouements.
however, one of THE most iconic scenes of all time has to be the film's lady gaga poker face scene, corresponding to episode six.
i would be really curious as to how tracz and steinberg approached the balancing of the liveliness and chaos of the casino, and the disorientation that the kids feel once trapped inside. as they cast age appropriate actors (hollywood who?), i think ASOUE and PJ both contrast the different tonalities of the danger in which the children face, to their youth and inexperience.
for episode four, i would love to see how the writers approached the elevator scene in particular; where percy thinks a woman's chihuahua is a service dog (#adhd king), and it turns out to be a chimera. this show has the potential for really positive neurodivergent representation, a topic in which i hope is explored in greater depth throughout the television show.
as the story is fundamentally meant to teach as well as entertain, i would also be curious to know whether some of riordan's canon was diverged from in order to be more accurate to the traditional myths of antiquity. i did a big re-read of the books last year (in french) in order to re-familiarise myself with the stories, and i'm really excited to see how mr. tracz approached the storytelling in his upcoming episodes.
i. is there any scene or element you would be excited to see in the show ?
ii. how do you think the ASOUE and PJ failed adaptions compare and diverge from one another ?
iii. are there any questions you would have for m.catastrophist if you were to ask him ?
