Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone (2001):Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets (2002):Which of the Chris Columbus-directed Harry Potter films do you prefer and why? I prefer the Chamber Of Secrets because the book is my favorite in the Harry Potter series and I just feel it’s a much better movie than the first movie with better acting from the main trio and it has better special effects and I love the story of both the book AND the movie more. That being said, the book is much better and I wish Alfonso Cuarón directed the Chamber Of Secrets instead.

I have the exact reverse opinion of deleted OP. I think both the second movie and book are the weakest in the series, and the movie is criminally overlong considering the thin source material. Imo it lacks the warmth of the first movie, has too much of a Scooby Doo-"let's uncover an evil plot" vibe, and feels hackneyed like a traditional Hollywood kids movie of its time. So much so, that I think Alfonso Cuarón probably saved the franchise from having a much faster "outdated" expiration date.
The first movie has to its credit that it found the cast and created the visual and filmic tone for the books from zero (or rather just from words), and did so quite successfully. The story also has the edge over the second book, because it gets to set up the magical world from a complete outsider's perspective, and introduce many of the story's cornerstones (important characters, backstory, etc).
I've read that Terry Gilliam wanted to direct the first film, and I wish he would have done the second film instead. Columbus actually did a great job with the first.

for some reason the chamber of secrets was the only movie i had on dvd as a kid, so i've seen it way too many times even though i never liked it much. by the 10th watch i was getting mad that Ron says "eat slugs" to cast a spell, which is logically inconsistent with the way spells are supposed to work. by the 20th watch i was probably zoning out at the cloudy effect around the cake that dobby levitates.

As in the only Harry Potter film you owned, or literally the only movie you owned?
