An Examination of The Paddington Films
by H.T.T.
This is an entirely serious academic discussion on why the Paddington films share themes with the ASOUE Books, making them, quite possibly, a spiritual successor.
Paddington I features the main protagonist taken away from his familiar dwellings after a tragic accident, leaving this semi-orphaned character in the hands of a new guardian, in this case The Brown Family. Attempting to fit in with his surroundings, he is discovered by an individual with ties to an academic organization that her and her family have been shunned from and who is now relentlessly pursuing our semi-orphaned hero with an intent to kill. The villain manipulates a series of circumstances, including The Brown Family's neighbor, resulting in the protagonist being called untrustworthy despite clear evidence that someone is out to end him. And yet, one of the villain's manipulated henchman somehow breaks his conditioning for a moment to aid our hero, even though he still remains an enemy of sorts out of spite.
Paddington II leans even more so on these themes with the inclusion of a murder over a MacGuffin. Where once there was a sugar bowl, now lies a Pop-Up Book and a family of wicked performers intent on stealing a large fortune. Our hero, upon learning the truth, attempts to stop this wrongdoing, but is foiled by a washed up actor sporting various disguises while flaunting a narcissistic personality that feigns any appearance of innocence...even to the point of turning the town against the hero, forcing this semi-orphaned bear to become a fugitive on the lam to confront the idea of grey morality. Yet, this love of self ultimately spoils the villain's schemes.
Paddington III: Paddington in Peru is set to release in November, but while we await the day such a film is unleashed upon the conscience of humanity, what we can speculate are the similarities to the latter half of the series, that being our protagonists are now taking on an active role and setting out from the confines of their guardian's home to a distant, mountainous location to find a family member who they still hope is alive to deliver one final message.
An expression of many thanks for your thorough reading into my studies concerning the Paddington Case. Enclosed are three peppermints, a loaf of bread, and a jar of marmalade.
