Hmm...just a minute...I belive this theory has already been put forward, but: While the Bauds were out on the beach, the Quagmires, who the children's parents knew well, came with Quigley. (Isadora and Duncan were back at home, doing chores, but Quigley had done them in advance) The triplets didn't know the three very well, and didn't recognize them at Prufrock Prep. During that time, Count Olaf (who wasn't really a relative of the children at all, but rather killed the real one and posed in his place--hey, that's an idea! What if Olaf isn't his real name?) started the fire, and the occupants were engulfed in flame, apart from Quigley, who escaped the fire. Also, to add to the 'Olaf not his real name' idea, it may be that some of his theatre troupe found out, and he had them killed, starting from Book 8, I think.

Olaf's fakes names are anagrams of Count Olaf. By the way, I'm a new member, but I've been browsing the forums for a month or two.

That would explain the "deaths", I guess. But the Quag's themselves said that Quigley died in the fire... he didn't escape. I think he was picked up by Seblad at the mansion and stuffed into the snowman. But wait... Isadora and Duncan where at home when the fire happened? Uh? EXPLAIN!

Er...well, its' a little far fetched...but you never know. I thought, however, that in TAA, the Quags say that Quigley died in the fire that burned their house down. I'll have to look again....Hum...well, it just said they died in a fire...in fact, it seems to compleatly avoid the fact that their house burned down...granted, I only read the one spot, but maybe you ARE on to somehting. Or not.

Last time I checked if you go to ls.com and click on Olaf it gives you his real first name. His last name is olaf

Honestly, I don't really know. Im a new member, and I love the LS books so I thought that this would be a neat place to hang out. Well, I think that it is an adjective as well, because I dont think they would spoil the surprise on LS.com.....But...You never know. That Olaf is a mysterious man!

Didn't Quigley explain himself what happened on the day of the Quagmire fire? He said that his mother put him through a trapdoor in the floor, which turned out to be part of the tunnel that led to Uncle Monty's library. So he wasn't at the beach at all. My guess is that Olaf probably is his real name, since that's what everyone in both factions of VFD call him, and presumably they knew him since he was a child (when he was dragged by his ankles, blah blah). As far as Zombies in the Snow is concerned, I think Olaf was disguising himself as the child in the photograph, and he purposely mixed up the Sebald code in his lines, and that's why Uncle Monty didn't get the message. But I don't think the survivor in the snowman was Quigley. It was probably another orphaned survivor of a fire who was taken in by Dr. Sebald to be a new member of the good faction of VFD.

on·er·ous ( P ) Pronunciation Key (nr-s, nr-) adj. Troublesome or oppressive; burdensome. See Synonyms at burdensome. Law. Entailing obligations that exceed advantages.
onerous
adj : not easily borne; wearing; "the burdensome task of preparing the income tax return"; "my duties weren't onerous; I only had to greet the guests"; "a taxing schedule" [syn: burdensome, taxing]
i thought so too, but then i looked up onerous.
*Note: that if it IS his first name, there is "Nero" in there, and Nero was an evil roman emporor*
