on page 225 of TSS
'As they looked at the villainous thing they had made, the three VOLUNTEERS could not help wondering....'
the rest doesn't matter. the three voluteers are violet, klaus and quigley. are they REALLY volunteers?! are they in VFD?

I think he was just referring to the disguises they were wearing. Like he always refers to Olaf in his costumes, that would be what he is doing here.

no this sentence was before they met up with olaf. this is when the dug the pit and were wondering if it was the right thing to do. they weren't disguised as volunteers yet.

They couldn't really be volunteers because they would've known about V.F.D. Quigley could be, I guess, but he would've been lying to the Baudelaires.
I still think it's refering to the disguises. What else would they be refering to?

ya .. i think they stopped carriing volunteers by their ankles anyway they stopped tattooing... somewhere it says something about VFD isolates kids with good observation/notetakking skills and makes them do ardous tasks or until thier ankels have healed.
also i think the 'volunteers' bit is bcuz the baudes are being trained and they are only realizing it. MAYBE quigly told voilet they were volunteers up on the slope... or that the kids are doing the tasks (slope climbing etc) on thier own free will...

But if they WERE volunteers, they would know what VFD stood for, and would've know about the eye and CountOlaf and that would ruin the whole story and make the Bauldelaires look like a bunch of weirdos who are also stupider than those guys in Dumb and Dumberer

No, that's not true.. just because you volunteer for something doesn't mean you know all the in and outs of the organization. I think they are called volunteers in this book because they realize they are helping VFD in capturing Count Olaf. They are volunteering to help with VFD's noble cause even if they know nothing about VFD. That could be...........................

Another thing about the volunteers they talk about when they take them by the ankles.
They are volunteers in the eyes of the VFD members, but not really in the eyes of the kids. They are volunteers because they did some key actions (Read Lemony's biography) that made them be volunteers.
So when the "volunteers" do something, they might not even realize it, but they are acting like volunteers.
