If it were a temporary tattoo, Count Olaf would have washed it off in TRR rather than cover it with makeup.

the side of the ankle never occured to me before, but as real tatoos are permanent, i dont think they would be able to switch at momentary schism, although olaf could have gotten his 'good' side one lasered off, and got a new one after.
the inside of an ankle could mean a neophyte or an advanced member or the other way around with the outside... i really dont know...

maybe at first they did it on the outside of their ankles, and noticed that they could be identified as v.f.d. members easily, since on the outisde of the ankle it would be easier to see.
they might have changed it so they couldn't be discovered as v.f.d. members.
but how would they get the others off? lasers.....i dunno, just a guess as to why they switched places (i doubt it was an accident, with all the effort put into the idea of the series, that they'd forget something as simple as where a tatoo goes).

Maybe the tattoos changed looks because of the whole VFD thing-we didn't know about VFD before, so it wouldn't have helped to see VFD in a tattoo anyway...but that's kind of weird...normally clues are there the whole time...

i really dont know. i doubt brett would make that big of a mistake, the outside or inside. the shape of the tattoo has a slightly more leinient changablity because before we didn't know it was the insigna. It should have stayed the same, though.

I Know loads of mistake in TSS it says they asw 4 tiny words the world is quiet here actually lemony if you could count You'd it was 5 words the four words were "v.f.d. library" and swans, yes, the mistake is just in the pics not the writing. boy wouldn't that be troubling if it was in the writting?......

the four words were "v.f.d. library" TSS p. 269: ... saw four tiny words etched over their heads, right underneath the large letters spelling "V.F.D. Library." "The world is quiet here," Quigley read. The four words are clearly those underneath V.F.D. Library, and Quigley then reads those five words aloud.

The four words are clearly those underneath V.F.D. Library, and Quigley then reads those five words aloud. how about u try writing eleven books and see how many mistakes u make hmmm? give lemony a break, honestly, who really gives a c-r-a-p if he says four instead of five. pfft, who knows, maybe its not even an accident. the place burned down, maybe all they could see was "--- world is quiet here" or "the world -- quiet here". he still might have been referring to v.f.d. library anyway, just worded weirdly.

Calm down, Kev. It's a curiosity and was shared on the board. I clarified with the quote only when somebody else denied the mistake existed at all. No need to be vociferous or insulting over this trifle.

.....sorry e, i wasnt trying to be mean. i just never admit im wrong, and if i do (rarely) its sort of an angry, half-admitting kind of thing. i dunno. i guess, i think that part of the sign might have been burned away so it only showed four words.

No worries. It's not the admitting that gets to me, it's the being wrong - which happens every now and again despite my best efforts. And if someone says you don't rock Kev, just roll with it.

swans, i doubt that Daniel Handler would not view the pictures that Brett drew. can you imagine slaving over a book, then not viewing the pictures that your artist drew for you, and then finding out there was a mistake, like he accidentally drew TMWABBNH and TWWHBNB or something? no, i am sure that he saw the pictures, but in the worst (or best) case scenario, he just didn't see the tattoo switch sides on olaf. i think that jacques's tattoo is supposed to be on whatever side it was, anyway.

i noticed that thing about the clothes too, although now that i think about it, wasn't Klaus wearing a Doctor's coat or something like that? Sunny too? Is violet wearing the gown at the end of THH? (my freind has my book)
You've never seen him as a big stickler for details? This series is incredibly, ridiculously detailed!!!! i think that he *may* just not have wanted to critisize Brett for minor details, or didn't catch them until it was already published.

OK, I'm a little confused here. Do the books ever mention which side of which ankle the tattoo is on? Did I miss it? If Handler switched it in the books, it might be a clue. If it's just in the illustrations, I'd write it off as inconsistency.
