Ok it may be nothing but if you get out your copy of Carnivous Carnevel and look at the letter that Lemony writes to his editor in the back of the book you see some very good clues (sort of)....If you look at the quote he writes it says " The world is" and then it faids away but it must mean "the world is quiet here" and that is a quote lemony uses as the password to get the manuscrip to the slippery slope... also at the very end you seethe word "trice." that has to be "betrice" so mabey lemony was telling his editor that betrice will be in the slipper slope book....could he possably be telling him that eseme really was betrice???

You may be on to something there. I don't think that Esme is Beatrice, but there has been some argument that the woman with hair and no beard is. After all, it would make sense that at least one (if not both) of the fearsome characters in TSS have been mentioned before in one form or another. Isn't it too late in the series to bring out completely new major villains?
(Then again, I wouldn't put anything past Snicket!)

But he refers to Beatrice many times by name, and says the woman with hair and no beard is too frightening to mention by name. And Beatrice can't be Esme because Esme took her place in Al Funcoot's play, the one Lemony reviewed. But I do agree Trice refers to Beatrice.

I think that the part that says "The world is..." refers to the library arch, as Lem says that "I am taking each of the thirteen chapters..(no words)... in different places" so the Arch that says The world is Quiet Here could be a place that the editor would have to get a chapter. The part that says "She will give you a key, which *will*...." who is She? could be the WWHBNB.
Also if lemony is leaving a "rare photograph of a swarm of *snow gnats*, to help Mr Helquist with his illustrations. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD YOU...." should you what? look at the photograph? he doesnt say anything about live snow gnats. meh.

Trice, has to be Beatrice, but Bea wasn't in TSS, And I don't think we'll see Bea until book 13, and I think she'll get involved with the Bauds and ends up dying, and that is because if The woman he loved died to save some kids, the he felt he had to write about the children............................
