Today, I made the salad described in TSS. I sliced mango and celery and black beans and olive oil and lime juice and pepper. And I chilled it. And when I ate it, I was like "Ok, I'm not hungry anymore." It wasn't bad, but the mango was kind of mushy. So there. I've tried the salad. Any one else tried it? or ideas or anything?

Did you try substituting the chopped celery with hearts of palm? And I'm not sure if mangos are supposed to be mushy...I think it was the olive oil that did it. Next time (if you so wish) try keeping the mango seperate from the salad, chill both, and then mix them together when you're ready to eat.

No didn't subsitute celery with hearts of palm because I don't know what a heart of palm is. The mango went mushy, probably because it was in the fridge for and hour and a half. Your idea sounds good, if I try it again, I will do it your way.

Really the salad doesn't have a lot of flavour.

Here's a definition of hearts of palm: The Cabbage Palmetto (Sabal palmetto) is native to the Southeastern U.S. and the Caribbean. Also known as Cabbage palm and Swamp Cabbage. This is the plant that hearts of palm are obtained from. The tender hearts of the terminal bud or young leaf shoots. Hearts of palm have many layers (similar to leeks), and are a pale ivory color, with a very mild nutty flavor. They are used mostly in salads.
And look at this: www.scandinavianspice.com/Recipe/View.asp?Recipe=Hearts+of+Palm+SaladDoesn't it look like the Snicket Salad? EDITED to add that my mom once had a can of hearts of palms, which she ate. I refused, because they looked gross and uninviting. Er, not that that should affect your decision to eat them.

It does look a lot like the salad! Good work! Um, I don't think I'll be trying Hearts of Palm anytime soon. My mom refuses to buy them.

J: Ew. I wouldn't bother making it, partially because I'm not fond of anything in it. Captiosus: I'd eat it. J: That's because you're a dog. You'd eat anything put in front of you.

Once again you continue to post as a dog.... No I wouldn't necessarily like the salad, and neither would my dog she hates lettuce. But I'm sure puttanesca would taste better. Perhaps the salad was made for the specific purpose of making no one want to touch it so something could be hidden in it.

There's no Lettuce in the salad. And I agree, I don't like it much. I'm starting to think that's what K had in mind when she invented the recipe.

She didn't invent it, remember? It's a traditional Scandinavian salad.

J: I'd prefer the salmon over the salad. Captiosus: I think the salad was thrown in there as a connection between the Baudmom and K. J: Maybe it's got something to do with VFD? (Verbal Fridge Dialogue)

J: Never did I say Baudmom WAS K, but I think he threw it in there as a clue or a red herring.
