It means Volunter Fire Department. Here is my proof:
In TSS, page 231, it says that the eye insignia meant, before the schism, integrity, the prevention of fire, and being well-read.

Well, Ineedyourhelp, although you strongly say it still isn't Volunteer Fire Dept., you don't have proof that it ISN'T, other than saying he wouldn't give it away in the tenth book. Although it still is very likely it is something else.

Quigley says that it's Volunteer Fire Department, but then the question is: How much does he know? Investigating this mystery, you find questions whose spurious and possibly intentionally deceptive answers lead only to more questions. That's the great thing about Mr. Snicket's books. Anyway, look up VFD in a reputable dictionary(a heavy one where not every word is illustrated) or on a dictionary website. You may be surprised, unless you've been told to look it up before.

anywhere you go on the web, the most popular thing for VFD is Volunteer Fire Department. Wouldnt it be too easy for it to be it. Handler is much deeoer than that.

On websters.com, I found an "acronym finder," these were the 12 most popular:
VFD Volunteer Fire Department VFD Vacuum Fluorescent Display VFD Valorous Farms Dairy (fictional, Lemony Snicket) VFD Variable Field Data VFD Variable Frequency Drive VFD Verbal Fridge Dialogue (Lemony Snicket) VFD Verified Free Distribution VFD Very Fancy Doilies VFD Veterinary Feed Directive VFD Village of Fowl Devotees (books by Lemony Snicket) VFD Virtual Flight Deck (aviation) VFD Volunteers Fighting Disease

I agree with Ineedyourhelp; DH is too smart to do that, Volunteer Fire Department is too obvious, especially if you can look it up in a dictionary and thats the definition. Also, the reason it says that in the dictionary is because if you drive by your local fire department, it will most likely say VFD; Volunteer Fire Department. So I think it must stand for something else.

I think it means Volueenter Fire Detectives. Or something that has nothing to do with fire. The Fire could be putting us off track.

I dont think so, because the evil side of VFD like to burn things down, and the good side of VFD is against the evil side, obviously, so...

I dont think so, because the evil side of VFD like to burn things down, and the good side of VFD is against the evil side, obviously, so... yes, but before the schism their were no fires. so fire COULD be throwing us off track. you never know.

The Snicket-based ones show Snicket's growing influence on the internet's culture. However, why isn't Volunteers Fighting Disease labeled "fictional, Lemony Snicket"? I'll go Google it. Having Googled it, I found sites that just happened to have the words "volunteers" "fighting" and "disease" on the same page. However, an exact phrase search turned up Lemony Snicket sites. Perhaps the dictionary people just forgot to label it as fictional. What do you think?

That would be scary. Forty people singing songs to you in a hospital to make you feel better is something I don't want to see.

Perhaps the real-world Volunteers Fighting Disease are actually ordinary doctors. Or paramedics. Or people who do whatever they can to stop the spread of contagious diseases. It's better than the alternative. Were I sick or bone-broken, I wouldn't want heart-shaped-balloon-weilding folks singing insipid verses about coughing up bile within 20 miles of my hospital bed. Just a side note: The first letters of each line of the first stanza of the infamous VFD song spell out WAIT.

I think maybe whoever sent it in forgot to label it as Snicket, or something like that. Same with "very fancy doilies."
That's interesting that it says "wait" in the song. I wonder if that was done on purpose. If so, probably telling us to wait to find out what VFD really stands for...
