I also believe that both of the parents are dead, but I used to have this theory that mother or father of the Baudelaires could be among the Olaf troupe, of course undercover, to somehow overlook their children.

Funny thing, I had the same theory, I thought Fernald - the hook handed man for all intents and purposes - was the Baudelaire's father in disguise, but I sorta 'forgot' about that theory as I read the series.
