All the good adults have no spines.
Hector--won't speak Jerome--won't stand up for himself The guy at the Lucky Smells Mill--wouldn't stand up for himself.
Also, the Bauds and the Quags seem like the only people who take action...that's one of the only things I dislike about the book.

Yeah, maybe he's trying to get across that children can take action too, and not just adults?

Interesting point. I read Roald Dahl's autobiography a while back and I don't recall him being very passive.

Well, all the sailors are named after famous authors. So maybe the said sailors are the authors who the adults are modelled after.
I never noticed the author-adult thing. I don't know much about authors' private lives...but it just shows the genius of Handler and his readers.

Well I know JD Salinger (author of "to Esme with love and Squalor) was shy. Ok, that's putting it mildly. The man was a recluse.

Maybe this is just a VFD thing, all VFD people are sort of cowardly after all these fires and such. Lemony describes himself as a coward.

YES! Of course! I GOT IT!
Hector gets skittish in front of the Council because he might break a rule, which would mean he'd have to be burned at the stake! Unless its been mentioned in the books before. In which case, Handler got it.

well, what was Ronald Dahl like? I was just thinking Charles could be Ronald Dahl since a peach is mentioned in TMM. In TVV Hector actually quotes Carroll. Just a nitpick - his name was Roald, or something like that, not Ronald. Anyway, I don't know, but, hey - wait a sec - BURNED at the stake? Something that has to do with FIRE which all VFD members are afraid of?

Yes, that was my point. Hector just doesn't like fire. I doubt the Bauds do, either. And Duncan even said he was afraid of fire for quite a bit.

I'm terribly sorry this is comletely off the topic, but why does everyone call him by his real name now? Is it just to show they're not stupid? (no offense to anyone who didn't know his real name because I call him by his author name) I kind of like calling him Lemony Snicket, it just seems to suit his sour and unfortunate books. eh hem...please continue with the topic.

Exactly! Daniel Handler writes the series, but he writes it from the point of view of Lemony Snicket who is one of the characters in the story.

I'm guessing it's most likely a coincidence. Something like that.
