I searched this site over the last 90 days and haven't found any mention of this, so I thought I'd note: C.M. Kornbluth mentioned in TSS pp. 192-193 and 284 is a reference to science fiction writer C.M. Kornbluth. Here's a url for a site devoted to the man: www.luna-city.com/sf/cmk.htmBTW the C was for Cyril. We haven't had one of those, and the mechanical instructor of TSS was so secretive that no one knew what the C or M stood for.

His death pre-dated my birth and I have not read any of his work. I used to read a lot of sci-fi, however, and so recognized the name.

The title that I recognized was The Syndic, but I cannot recall a darn thing about it. Following your example, I shall put a CM Kornbluth story on my reading list (there's a useful thing to keep in a commonplace book). Darn this Daniel and his luring us into reading more and more.

Of course he's going to lure us into reading more-- He wants everyong to be well-read. Haha . . . Anyway, all the sailors in the photo in LSUA had the names of authors. There were only one or two I didn't recognize, though. I'd read most of the others.
(One is "Bellairs"-- John Bellairs. Dead now, but wrote young adult horror/mystery novels that would bring history and literature into the stories. It's wehre I learned about the funeral of Charles I, Constantinople, Shakepeare [ a LOT of old Will in those books] and more medaeival alchemists than I could shake a stick at . . . whatever that means.)
Kornbluth I don't remember reading, but I might well have.

Okay, if CM Kornbluth's death predated our births, then that should give us some insight upon how long ago the books take place...When did he die, anyway?

I thought for a fleeting moment he married Beatrice (when someone would be a [insert invention here], he would say "Beatrice, come quick...") Why specifically Beatrice? Then I remembered it said he was very secretive...didn't seem like he would get married.
