I have made some comparesons to edward gorey and lemony.
If you know who edward gorey is you should relize that his works 'The Hapless Child" and "The Loathesome Couple" you will notice some similarities in the ideas. LS has probably read them!

Yes, Gorey and Snicket both deal with somewhat morbid topics... and they both rock at it...
I don't really know if The Loathesome Couple is much like ASoUE... it more adult-oriented, having it about adults, with a small amount of adult content...
I do see how The Hapless Child is like it though, a girl whose life just gets worse and worse and worse and worse...
