Thanks, it isn't often 'newbie swine' like me get complimented on posts. I'm vying for lack of dexterity. Mr. Poe never struck me as exactly a brilliant man. But there is still this nagging voice in my head, saying: How could anyone be that unintelligent? More to the point, how could anyone that unintelligent be an important banking official? I once came up with the following odd theory: Olaf(or a henchman, or possibly Lulu) bribes Mr. Poe with money or cough syrup, asking him to tell where the children are. If he won't, they threaten him with the nearest available sharp object, be it a convenient knife, a hook-hand, or a broken shard of the cough syrup bottle. Fearing for his life, Mr. Poe reveals the truth. It's also possible that Olaf's allies helped him advance to his high rank as reward for telling them where the Baudelaires were. Do you find that plausible?

i don't think that the poes are evil v.f.ders because if he was he wouldn't have saved violet from count olaf in the first book... also i think that he's just dumb!

Do you find that plausible? I'd say it is entirely plausible. However, I am opting for the first (They threaten his life, rather than the second (They offer him a higher bank position). I'm not sure why, except for the fact that I have baseless faith in the human race to 'do the right thing.' Although selling out the Bauds in exchange for his life isn't exactly the right thing to do, it is more righteous than selling them out for just a banking position.

True. And if I remember correctly from swans's typing out of some TBB:RE notes for us, there was something that pointed out that there was some sort of link bewteen Mr. Poe and Esmé Squalor. It may have been as simple as hinting that banking officials are corrupt or tend to know eachother... I'm not quite sure. Anyway, the insinuation was there. But either way, there's probably something afoot with dear Poey. So if we say that he's just a stupid guy, then that pretty much means he can be anyone's puppet... I mean, a man that stupid can be manipulated by anyone. Who knows, maybe that's why he rose to the high status of official in charge of coins! *cue "Oooh"s and "aaaah"s* But seriously, if we go for the option that he REALLY is an idiot, it pretty much means they control him, because, let's face it, there have just been WAY too many times where Poe's been too stupid to be reasonable... coincidences that just happened to end up with some escape plan for Olaf. So if he really is as studip ad he looks, the baddies are probably taking advantage of that, and Lemony's probably hinting at it. Granted, the other guardians had some weird things up with them, but we're pretty much sure they were also affiliated with VFD. But if we say that he's just putting on an act of idiocy, then we can come to pretty much the same conclusion but by different means. Remember TUA? At the time I thought, "Why is Mr. Poe not as useful as he ought to be?" a slightly stupid and not too common question (like "Who is Beatrice?" for example). I guess it looks like LS was hinting at something in including that among the "least" important questions. Good point. But, I can't help thinking that Poey will come back and haunt the Baudelaires, Snickets, or the Quagmires, even. ...Where were those TBB:RE notes? I have got to read them...

You aren't newbie swine! That's a horrible thing to say! Who was the jerk that told you that? No one said it to me in particular. I have just noticed the tendency of some older members to insult the newer members. But nobody has yet insulted me, thankfully. And sorry for the offtopic post. By the way, neggie, I was going to reply to your long post, but I didn't know what to say. It was very good and well-thought out.

I don't think Mr Poe is working for Olaf because wouldn't he just go to Mr Poe to find out where the baudelaires are.But I KNOW Mr Poe is in V.F.D because in chapter 14 of Bad Beginning that Mr Poe is in evil V.F.D.
