So, could Aunt Josephine still be alive? The books never said that for sure she was dead. I think she still might be alive. What do you peeps think?

Sure, Aunt Josephine could still be alive, but i doubt it. I just don't think that her character could do much in the story anymore so there would be almost no point to her not being dead. But thats just my opinion. But, with Daniel writing anything could happen.

I also suspected that Josephine could have swum to shore, after losing her life jackets. If she is alive, she might or might not have some impact on the story. I don't particularly miss that old grammar-obsessed realtorphobe, so I don't mind her being dead.

[whine] I think if you have a theory, you really need to post some small evidence to WHY you believe it...[/whine] which I admit to doing sometimes as well.
I'm not sure...it's possible but really there IS no evidence to give...it's like saying it's possible Esme's maidan name is Quagmire, which I've heard before, with no evidence. However on the small description of TGG, it mentions hypochondia(thinking you're ill as evidence points to it, but you are not) and a message from a lost friend. Reminds ME of Josephine for sure...but 'a lost friend' sounds more like Quigley, who fits the word 'lost' rather well.

Maybe swimming in Lake Lachrymose taught her something, or brought back some memories of when she wasn't afraid of everything. Maybe she has changed. I doubt it, but hopefully.

I think she could still be alive. I just think that the bad V.F.D. saved her, and captured her.
I would like to see her back alive again. She was cool.

I liked her, but she isn't my favorite character. I too, think she is still alive.

Maybe she has changed. I doubt it, but hopefully. I don't want her to change. I think she'll still be paranoid. I want her to still be paranoid. If she wasn't, then she would have no personality.

I don't want her to change. I think she'll still be paranoid. I want her to still be paranoid. If she wasn't, then she would have no personality. She would have a personality, just a boring, un-Snicket-ey one. And that probably wouldn't be much fun, but it annoys me that she is afraid of things to such an extreme that she disregards the ones she loves. It's sad.

I must agree with the above - though Josephine's manner can be teeth-grindingly frustrating, her character would lose its Snicket-ey-ness without it. And the quirkiness of Snicket's characters is a large part of the books' charm. It would be interesting if Josephine was still alive - I can't see what function she would serve in the last books, but Daniel's codic writing always overrides logic, so it very well could be.

I personally don't think she's alive. Lemony said in the story that some fishermen found her bones. It's possible they could have been someone else's but I still thing she's dead. Though I could be and probably am wrong...
