Plenty to cry about, it says. How about the increasing tide of tie-in merchandise for Snicket's books?....That's something to cry about.
Actually, that thing's pretty funny. So maybe I'll laugh myself to teariness. Whatever.

Has DH been tempted by the siren song of fame and fortune to over-mercahndise his books? It kind of cheapens it somehow.

So maybe I'll laugh myself to teariness. Whatever. Please, lighten up...this is not indiciative of a tide of tie-in merchandise. It's just a promotional item. It's not for sale, and it's nothing new. They have made items like this for every book...the Hostile Hospital had the band-aid dispenser for instance. There's also the postcards, the Misfortune Cards, refrigerator magnets, etc. All made in very limited numbers. There's no "flood" coming...well, until the movie merchandising hits, but that's a different story. Your best chance to get one is to get cozy with someone who works in a bookstore. These items generally don't make it farther than the employees, who snatch them up (and sell them on eBay, of course.) Finally, of course Daniel Handler has been lured by bags of money- he's no JD Salinger. The film or the merchandise wouldn't exist without his signature somewhere.

I could do without a lot of the pay-for Snicket merchandise, but the promo stuff ROCKS HARD. My mom nabbed an immense amount of the pins from Borders (she works there), and my friend got me some of the postcards.

I think they're cute, and it's nice to have sort of teaser promo stuff before a book comes out. ;D

Those are cute, I'd buy those but I'd probably lose them.

Who's making them? Obviously not Harper Collins. I don't think you understand. Harper Collins had them made to promote the Grim Grotto, just as they've made dozens of promotional items for previous books. They are sent to bookstores to give away, but usually employees end up taking them all. They are not for sale (except on eBay), but they are official.

Ohhhhh... Did they have anything for The Slippery Slope? Yes, they did...hmmm, can't recall what it was though, other than the T-shirt that they sold at Barnes & Noble. The Misfortune cards perhaps? I really should catalog all of them one day. I'm lazy. There are dozens of items. I'm still trying to find a promotional tin of greeting cards that I have packed away in a box somewhere.
