I have it. It's okay. If you get it, get the one with the pewter pieces. Much cooler. Good points- Clever stories on the cards.
- Follows the story accurately.
- Challenging game play.
Bad points- Plays better with at least 3 players.
- Confusing directions with lots of things you must do each turn
- The children win just by not getting caught.
- Someone must always be Olaf. And it's hard for Olaf to win.
I think of the game more of as a collector item. That's why I got the pewter pieces and keep it in good condition. It looks nice on the book case by the series.

There are cards with different scenarios that happen to the kids or Olaf. These determine whether the kids escape or Olaf gets closer to winning. I'll try to scan some in tomorrow so you can see. I just thought they were cleverly written in the style of Lemony Snicket. EDIT: Here is a scan of some of the cards. The children have cards that they can use to stop Olaf and help Mr. Poe. Olaf has cards he can use to hurt the children or the guardian.

So cynical and so entertaining. I particularly like the "Politics Today" joke. Lemony's comments about critics seem somewhat ironic, given his past occupation.

Sorry to keep posting but how many characters can you play as? is it only klaus, violet, mr poe, and olaf? Also like which guardians are there in the game? That's another weird part of it. Nobody plays the guardian. It moves from room to room based on a draw of the cards. I say "it" because the guardian is just a black peg. It doesn't look like a person and it doesn't have the name of any one guardian from the books. Nobody plays Poe. He moves one square every round. He must get from the house to the bank and back before Olaf captures the children or the guardian dies. He could move more or less squares depending on what cards are played. Somebody must play Olaf. Your goal then is to capture the children. Somebody must play the children too. If there are only 2 players, one player must play ALL 3 children. If there are more players, the children are split between the players. The children also work together, so if there are multiple players, you can consult on how to play. Overall, I think this game plays better with at least 3 people. Four would be better. I've played with only 2 players, and it's a lot of work to be all 3 children.

Personally I own but the collectors edition and the regular one and I think both versions have good points.
The pewter figures are nicer then the cardboard ones but the board in the regular version has a clearer image on it, the collectors is too shiny as far as I am concerned.

It's not that hard to win as Olaf. I had trouble winning as Olaf also, but the game ends when Mr Poe goes to the bank and back, not the other way around. If you come up with a good strategy for Olaf you can make the Guardian lose 6 or 7 life points by the time Mr. Poe gets to the bank and 13 by the time he comes back. It makes it a close game, but that makes it more exciting.

Bookstores, Target, Amazon, ebay. Plenty of places. Just make sure you have friends to play it with.

I got this game at Borders. I can't believe you're having trouble winning as Olaf! All the times I've played it (which isn't that many, but still...) Olaf has won, and the Baudelaires haven't come close. I've only done it with two players, though.
